The Eisbach is the small river that runs through the English Garden. At a couple of places on the river there are standing waves which are popular with surfers and rodeo kayakers. The most famous surf wave on the Eisbach is the one at the Haus der Kunst.

Despite its relatively small size and popularity with swimmers the Eisbach has some strong currents and hidden and dangerous underwater eddies. There have been several drownings of adults and children alike. Swimming is strongly discouraged by the authorities in any part of the Eisbach but should you choose to swim anyway avoid all white water sections and get out and walk round all weirs and obstacles. The safest way to swim is on your back with your feet out in front of you. This protects you against submerged dangers such as disposed of bikes and shopping trolleys.
