Bavarian International School
The Bavarian International School
is located in Haimhausen
, north of Munich.
The Bavarian International School e.V was established in 1991 as a non-profit association (eingetragener Verein) to serve the international community of the Munich area. The school offers an excellent quality education with English as the principal language of instruction. BIS is governed by a Board of Trustees and is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). There are 700 students attending BIS from over 40 different countries, the major nationalities represented in the school are American (22%) German (20%) and British (18%).
The three school sections of BIS are the Lower School 348 students; Middle School (grades six - eight), 152 students; and Senior School (grades 9 - 12) with 200 students. There is an extensive extra-curricula programme at BIS which includes sports teams, student government and Model United Nations, clubs and musical and drama productions.
The Schloss (mansion), which forms the impressive centerpiece of the Bavarian International School campus, has a rich history stretching back to the late 1500s. The building features a number of architectural treasures and has been the home of three significant Bavarian families over the years. BIS purchased the property in 1997 and, after a year of re-modeling and the construction of new purpose-built education facilities, opened its doors for the first time in September 1998. Set in its green and peaceful park-like environment, the conversion of the impressive and historic Schloss into classrooms and offices, along with the construction of modern purpose-built facilities for lower school education, science, library and physical education, now provide an ideal learning environment.
The Director works closely with the three Principals in the operation of the educational programme, and in connection with staff, students, parents and community, and with the Business Manager in the area of administration and support systems. This group comprises the BIS Leadership Team, which meets regularly and frequently to ensure smooth and consistent operation of the school. Strong support is provided for staff to engage in professional development activities, including acting as presenters at professional conferences.
The Lower School Principal is assisted by the Assistant Principal/Curriculum Coordinator, who supports the development of the PYP curriculum and its implementation by the Lower School teachers.
The school's current enrollment is 700 students of which 42 students are in the graduating class. The student age range from four-year old Pre-Reception to Grade 12 enhances the sense of community, and the size enables close and valued links with members of the school community.
In the graduating class of 2006-2007, over 95% of students entered into a higher education institution.
Students are encouraged to make the most of the leadership and participation opportunities provided by the Student Council. The school is constantly seeking other positive avenues for student involvement, including Model United Nations, student assemblies, clubs, artistic performance, international public speaking, European Student Forum and peer support programmes.
