The thing is my girlfriend, who sadly is in the states right now, is trying to come back over after she graduates from the university of illinois. She is finishing up her masters degree in german tied in with a teaching certificate in teaching. her undergrad was german and geography. Now the problem is I am kinda stuck here for the next while (five to six years min) and we dont really want to do the whole long distance thing. So she is trying to find a job over here, but doesnt really know the best way to go about it. Previously she has worked here and been here with various student jobs and grants, having already spent four to five years in austria and germany.

i am more interested in what kinda jobs you could do with such a degree in germany. The basic problem is that with a degree in german coming to a land that speaks german doesnt really make sense. Or is this wrong?

From what I can see, she at least fulfils the criterion of having a Masters degree which you need if you want to be able to teach in Bavaria, assuming that's what she wants to do. I would assume she would be allowed to teach English at proper schools. By that I don't mean language schools. I really don't see a problem with your better half finding anything. She just needs to come over and start looking.

Yeah, your GF needs to come over and look. She may not get her absolute dream job, whatever that may be, but I would say that in general having that kind of German fluency and knowledge is a plus, not a handicap. I would recommend that she get her CV ready, German style - don't know what the proper format is for teachers around here though - and if she's not 100% set on teaching than she should contact the headhunters and recruiters. There's links to some if you use the search feature. Most of them will work with her since she's fluent.

If earning money right away is an issue, then perhaps she could try to get a post teaching english until she gets herself sorted. There a few english teachers on here who could give her a few pointers.

Anyone know of companies, Munich or elsewhere who require Scandinavian language speakers, and reasonably good German? Have a sales background, and can relocate anywhere in Germany as not yet put down roots in Munich.

Thanks

Steve

Hi,

I just registered here and I'm still learning the ropes. I have plans to move to Munich sometime between August and December of 2009. I will be graduating from an accredited four year university here in the United States with a degree in English. I'm looking for a full-time position of any sort. I am not currently fluent in German but I'm working on it. Anyone have any suggestions for possible employment? And, also, I'm a little confused about the hiring process. What does an American need to do to find work in Germany? What kind of German visa do I need to legally work over there? Do I have to have a job before I move there or can I look for work once I'm there? Any help with any of this would be most appreciated. Thank you!

Sounds like teaching English is your likely landing spot (you can possibly supplement that by giving tours of Munich duirng tourist season) and that will almost certainly be on a freelance basis. You would need to apply for a freelance visa in order to teach English here, but you can do that after you arrive here. Use the search function for more info (and there is plenty of it on this site).

Good luck...
