It's a shame that people on Toytown feel the need to post irrelevant, hurtful posts under faceless, anonymous posts. This forum can and often is very helpful, however when people post things that are just plain rude, wrong or irrelevant it destroys the relevance and usefulness of such a site. Many of the newcomer expats that I have spoken to recently and feel Toytown is a community of nitpickers and nigglers and won't post for fear of being rubbished of abused by the "more experienced". Until today I didn't agree. Unfortunately with the above comments I now have to agree.

I got a valid residence permit with 'only" travel insurance too.

 

but that was only provisionally accepted til I got real cover.  3 days later.

1. Once you have registered in Germany, you automatically become tax liable on your worldwide income and you need to have a valid German health insurance.

2. Somehow the Ausländerbehörde issued you a visa without properly checking your health insurance, yet believe you can't sue them when you get problems in future.

And these problems will be:

3. Once you get a job and become pflichtversichert by public health insurance, the insurance company will demand back payments for all years you weren't insured in Germany.

4. The Ausländerbehörde can realize you're not health insured and annul your visa.

 

You being in denial will not prevent these problems. Get health insurance now.

1. I have valid health insurance, valid for the entire duration for my visa - an 18c visa, one of the requirements of this visa is to have health insurance issued from your home country, valid for the entire period of the 18c visa.

2. When I change visa (to a working visa) then I need to have German insurance

I actually have health insurance under my travel insurance, however there is an excess I have to pay. At risk of taking this thread back on topic, the doctors here have a set table of charges for private patients.

It depends upons what they actually "do", but the prices start to mount up as soon as you phone them to book an appointment  - this will be represented on your bill.

 

Other than that, I really think the OP needs to re-think his membership of this forum. There really are some people we can do without!

Evening all! As an observer of the scene--coolness: good question!

This health insurance stuff is full of holes, full of crankiness, full of whimsical decisions by case workers/Consulates/ Ausländeramts and all the rest of it. 

I don´t know Barrel of Monkeys from Adam and I´ve never had to apply for an 18c visa ( but that was before Brexit!!!) but, basically, you never know how the Ausländeramts will react..sometimes - as in the case of language learners ie someone turning up at a Goethe Institut  or whatever ( but NOT proper students ) for a bit of der, die, das..may be treated leniently re health insurance and they MAY say " ok " (but often due to IGNORANCE as to other people´s backgrounds AND what is actually possible with German insurances or foreign ones..)

 

The problem is NOT with Barrel of Monkeys or with any of the posters here..the problem ( in my view ) is the inconsistency of rules, the lack of transparency, the sheer stupidity of the bureaucracy re health insurance, the is-there-anybody-out-there situation.

 

NO sane person knows the rules! ( especially those working in/out the system on a daily basis! ).

In fairness to the people who posted previously and were adamant they were correct, this morning I went back to the Foreigners office to clarify the facts. I explained the situation, took my paperwork for my health insurance and visa and asked them for the correct information.

 

Under an 18c Visa you must use your travel heath insurance from your country of origin - not German health insurance. Under an 18c visa you are not entitled to work, only to seek work. The 18c visa sits somewhere in between a tourist visa and a working visa - basically allowing a non schengen national to stay an extra three months and look for work in Germany. Once you change visa to a working visa then you must change your insurance to German Heath Insurance. This is what I have been told on two separate occasions by the foreigners office. Therefore I believe it is correct.Those on this forum that wish to still claim this is incorrect so be it.

 

I have been called a stupid arsehole, told to fuck off in private messages, told I've got limited intellectual capabilities and more because I dared to question the veracity of posts by other members and also because of my response to @RedMidge by saying "Why bother commenting on a topic if you are going to be a wanker". I didn't say he was a wanker, just stating that as I sat at home feeling pretty shithouse needing information on a Dr I felt his comment/ action was unnecessary. @RedMidge if your comment was indeed meant to be in someway helpful to others than I apologise for my reaction. If I wasn't feeling so unwell I probably wouldn't have even commented on your post.

 

To those people that felt it necessary to get online and throw in your abusive comments, who continued to abuse me even after I had provided factual information, I really hope that you are nicer people offline than you are when you are online.
