Dating expat English speakers in Munich

102 posts in this topic

Anybody else kind of had it with the Germans? Sure, they are lovely people and I am friends with many of them. But I don't want to date them anymore. Anyone else feel the same way? Just curious and looking to share a few rants...

Hi,

I had to check that this thread wasn't started by a Bitter Old Regular frankly. ;)

Expat or native, it doesn't really matter, they are still people, they have their baggage and so do you. Maybe someday we'll all find our matching luggage while some are currently sat at the Bag Tracking counter. Others have seen their luggage burst open on the conveyor belt, spilling dirty laundry all over the place, and sit and watch it go around the other passengers.

Country of origin is no guarantee of safe passage. If only it was so simple. Mind you my stuff always gets lost in AMS... *scratches head*

Good luck

Katrina

i'm dating a german [well technically austrian... but raised here] and while at first we both REALLY underestimated the impact of cultural and language differences and had some rough times because of it, now i can honestly say i'm the most in love i've ever been in my life... and european men [warning: GENERALIZATION] are SO much more romantic, world-wise and imaginative :D

oh sorry... i was supposed to rant... about that first year... german men [WARNING: another generalization] are incredibly opinionated, intensely domineering, subject to throwing tempter tantrums, rampantly emotional and always think they are right ;)

I've never "dated" (mostly get drunk with, shagged and then see what happens but hey, I'm British :D ) an English speaker since I've lived here and I don't think I could now.

I was with my ex for 8 years and there ARE cultural differences you need to get round but it is give and take.

Germans are kinkier too. Allegedly.

What about the German readers out there? Are any of you fed up with trying expats? Perhaps you think we're lovely people, and are friends with many of us, but you've tried dating us and honestly can't face any more of our whinging? Always interested in hearing the other side... ;)

i wouldn't say this: i think it depends on the person! i agree with katrina on this! it doesn't really matter where the person comes from!

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

That certainly has not been my (very limited) experience... very "by the book". But the foriegn dirty talk always gets a few extra points (though you never know if they're just saying "What the hell are you doing you idiot!") But before I get myself in trouble I will plead the 5th Amendment (though we're not in the US...)

Don't worry Anabi, German law doesn't force you to incriminate yourself either. ;)

@ anabi you experienced a woman though, right? The men are definately kinkier / more creative, none of that Grtho-style drinking, shunting and falling asleep!

But I have to agree with Ellewood, not just on humour but also on language during more "intimate" conversations... misunderstandings can really spoil the mood!

Dating women from other countries is just a matter of luck ! sometimes there is a complete misunderstanding, and god I think the Brits really have the weirdest sense of humor, and my girlfriend sometimes really takes offense to something that is said as a joke, although she just cannot understand this as a joke. Oh.. my girlfriend is Bulgarian.

Yup, JB it was a gal (I know I'm from SF but for some silly reason I still fancy girls). Though she did say she wasn't used to someone so "open minded" (implying that the German guys she had been with were a bit on the boring side... I was her first American :D ). But I'd consider myself several sigmas left of normal US or otherwise (okay, no more details ;) )

yeah, I've tried an american too.. as Katrina said, it's not so much where you come from, but who you are and what you're like as a person... luck of the draw.
