Anyone else here just homesick?

120 posts in this topic

Yeah, I think single people have it worse (in my experience anyway), and especially in small towns.

My time in Germany has an end date, so I don't get too homesick. But it is boring on weekends, because I have nothing to do! I can go shopping on Saturday, but that is about it. I don't want to go to the pub alone, especially when my German is not good. If I had a partner or friend here then we would just go! So my social life is dependant on going to Düsseldorf or somewhere else for the weekend, which I simply cannot afford to do often.

I really like Germany, and I think that I could live here full time, IF I had a partner from home (and if it was just a little warmer!).

But sometimes I miss things from home... I miss the food, my mum, my friends, the weather, the stars... But not enough to give up this oppertunity.

So far I can cook better mexican.. its having the things shipped in like corn tortillas.. I found a place in Germany that can ship really good ones to me ( almost as good as my Grandma's) and masa for tamales and corn husks, I finally found chedder cheese at a acceptable price. (taking out bank loans for cheese seems just wrong LOL) I have mastered making my own re-fried beans.. but I keep hoping to find somewhere where I don't have to cook it LOL I will gladly practice beignets at any time LOL!

OMG STOP!!! LOL You are making me hungry. I bought corn tortilla's at Real and they were not bad. As for the rest of it, well now I am gonna dream about Mexican food...LOL

Cooking Chinese is easier for us.

I am not sure if it has anything to do with being single...I was also homesick from time to time when I was in a relationship !! ;-) I think whether or not you are in a relationship, you still miss your family...

I agree though that it comes in waves...luckily for me, home is only 5 hours away with the car...so I can drive back home whenever the homesickness is too strong!

I regularly think that I am not gonna stay in Germany forever and every 6 months, I have my "I am so sick of it, I am gonna quit my job and move somewhere else" crisis...yet, it's been 4 years and I am still living here...I guess it is not that bad after all ;-))

The most important thing when you feel homesick is to try and remember all the good things about being here and the experience that you're making! it really helps, not to pack your suitcase and book the next flight back home!!

On the other end of the spectrum, I am here in Florida daydreaming about moving to Germany. I visited Aachen twice last year and fell in love with it. Most of the people I taked to over there however looked at me crazy when I mentioned I would like to live there. The truth is that the economy is bad, there is really not much to do in the Aachen, Netherlands, Koln area, the weather is bad, there is graffiti EVERYWHERE. Maybe it was because of my first time out of the US and this is just a phase, but I still would move there in a minute.

Oh I moved from Florida and I would love to go back. I am soooo cold LOL

There is a lot of truth to the thought that the first place you go out of the U.S. is the place you will want to go back too.

I think sometimes the culture shock as well! I come from a Hispanic family, we are very close and talk about everything and I have noticed that not just the germans, the english ( singular mind you) I swear there could be a large blue elephant in the room and the germans might scream Hallo! at it and cling their bike clingers at it but for sure no one would talk about it.

Well now, I've been (bin) here for ten years and if we're honest we read homesickness = loneliness. That can happen in any city worldwide or not? First things first, find a baker, a butcher and a shoemaker - hey things are looking good already. Google to the next expat site and find a couple of compatriots, drink beer, complain about the locals, the state of the nation, flirt with the waitress and bobs your uncle...

Alle angaben ohne gewähr!

Hmm I can not say I am lonely... The TT gang has filled my social calendar on top of work and sight seeing

confused by the whole "single" thing here maybe..

I have to say.. more so by the english than the germans..

Happens to us all.As you are here longer the pangs get weaker and the times you actually do go back distance themselves greatly

Hmmm sounds a little like the Matrix. If your here long enough you take the "red pill"...Sorry couldn't resist.

You sound like my husband. He says go out every day even if you don't speak the language and have a coffee or a beer and smile at everyone. Pretty soon everyone is trying to talk to you even if you don't speak the language. It has worked for me in the area I live. Hubby is making friends with the guys who hang out at the Trinkenhalle all day every day...LOL I have my butcher, baker and others. Still some days are hard.

well I have learned a lesson on that one.. because for some crazy reason I smile at people "say" on the train and then I can't seem to get them to stop speaking english to me.. and at certain times a night smiling at strangers gets me kissed sensless!! More so during Carnival.. not all bad but very strange!!!

Wow Kissed senseless eh? That would never happen in Essen. As a matter of fact I have been told smiling at people is considered a sign of weakness by some Germans and mental illness by others! I have never had people who "could not stop speaking English to me" never. Not in Essen. I have in other places, not Essen.

i agree with everyone who suggests that homesickness and lonliness are related. i miss home, but i never really feel 'sick' about it - more than anything and everything, i miss having ppl around me who i know and can relate to, who i can joke with and laugh at and cry in front of etc. living rather rurally in germany, i really only have my boyfriend - he is the only one who understands me and to whom i can rant and rave, and in front of whom i can sing and dance. this puts him in a precarious place too. when i first came, the noise of the german language all around me drove me to distraction, now it doesn't bother me so much. so things look better! but when i remember that to get home, i need at least 26hrs of flying and airport loitering... yeah, i get really sad.
