Anyone else here just homesick?

120 posts in this topic

I know alot of people that cannot speak the language, have their sky satelite and are not homesick at all! That is fine, but those people have not integrated at all... any my question to those that are NEVER homesick, if you are not homesick, and will live here for many years more, are you willing to give up your passport of your home nation... to me NEVER being homesick is a sign that your HATE your home land, and want nothing to do with it... well, then in my opinion, and yeah, its just my thoughts (as I am homesick constantly) are you willing to sacrifice your patriatism to your homeland for it? If not, then you do suffer Homesickness, so I have a hard time believing those that say they are NEVER homesick. Just food for thought!

I guess I was only a little bit homesick the first few moths I moved to germany, but having been here for over 2 years now, I honestly would not go back to my native england and if i did, i think i would get homesick.

I made germany my home, but of course will never be my "Heimat"

to me NEVER being homesick is a sign that your HATE your home land

With the greatest respect - that is utter drivel. I think it depends on what sort of a person you are. There are certainly things about the UK that I miss. Today a friend of mine popped in and brought me some Walkers Ready Salted crisps. It was great to have some crisps that just taste of potato and salt and not of 'Paprika'. Did I start pining for England? No.

Why?

Well - I carry a piece of England around in my heart/soul/psyche always - I don't need to be there to know that. I also feel that I am a 'Weltbürger', a citizen of the world.

I enjoy living in Cologne. I also spent some time in the Ukraine and really got to appreciate the people and the differences in the way things are done over there. I would have been happy staying. I honestly believe that I could settle almost anywhere and would relish the differences to how things are done in the UK. That does not mean that I hate England. The town and surrounding villages where I grew up in England are still special to me, because of my childhood memories. Cologne is special to me because of the last few years I have spent here. Nikolaev is special to me because although I only spent six weeks there - I started to feel at home - I started to get recognized by neighbours and shopkeepers and felt welcomed. If you are the sort of person (like me) who can see positive things in every country, who loves watching people and learning about foreign lands (not as a tourist - visiting the sights - but experiencing real life). Does that mean you hate any of the lands you left behind? If in 10 years I am living in France or Italy or Russia or new Zealand or anywhere, and feeling too happy and delighted by life to experience longing for the past... that doesn't mean I hate England or Germany or any other place I have left.

Well I have not been able to learn German much which is probably part of the problem

Nope. Speaking krout does not do anything whatsoever to make you miss home less. Just means you can understand what fat moustachioed blokes in leather shorts are saying. Believe me, you ain't missing much,

Maybe you are not homesick as such, just sick of Germany. Try France or Spain. Much, much nicer places to be.

( ear perking up!) REAL has rice krispy treats?? :D Ohh yes I do miss grits, MMMM MMMMM I was raised in the south after all. I have one small box of grits ( I think 8 packets) and I have been rationing them since march.. I have such a long list that I had to learn to make on my own ... beignets, ( they taste better in new orleans at cafe du monde) I bought the whole collection of top secrets recipe cook books.. so I can now recreate things like chilli's Salsa.. tony romas bbq sauce.. the biscuts from KFC .. I keep hoping my sister will pack my mom or grandmother in a box because I can recreate their recipes but you know it would be great to have either one puttering around my kitchen making tamales and enchiladeas... I think it's funny sometimes the things you miss.

I am working my way to new favorites here I have hit up just about every mexican place in cologne. I think I had a very good bowl of wanton soup at a thai place yesterday ( could have been ordinary but the company I was with was EXCEPTIONAL so you never know! I will try it on my own and let you know if it is as good as it was yesterday!)

I actually have to say I have met some really nice people on Toytown.. we have become quite the little gang ( kisses)

My home sickness comes in waves.. More so when I have a bad day and I miss my family.. you never realize how close you are to your Family and friends until you have a bad day and they are like 3000 miles away!

I don't think thats really the answer. I would still be away from home and I have lived in Spain and France and it has not been any better. It's not the guys in leather shorts I want to communicate with...LOL

Been here 25,5 years and here was the run down for me:-

After:-

1,5 years then a 2 week spell back in Blighty

Another 2 years then a week

3 years after 2 weeks

As time goes on it gets longer before i want to go back.Lived here longer than i lived in England. To be honest when you mention homesickness i have to look at it from 2 perspectives.Do i miss England or the people there.

And its the people i miss not the place.

So far I can cook better mexican.. its having the things shipped in like corn tortillas.. I found a place in Germany that can ship really good ones to me ( almost as good as my Grandma's) and masa for tamales and corn husks, I finally found chedder cheese at a acceptable price. (taking out bank loans for cheese seems just wrong LOL) I have mastered making my own re-fried beans.. but I keep hoping to find somewhere where I don't have to cook it LOL I will gladly practice beignets at any time LOL!

Hi Elaine, I ve been here four years and miss my homeland (England) on a regular basis, as already posted above, the people not the place. I find it comes in about 6 months waves...after my first six months, I was very close to packing it all in...and then after a year I almost, then after 18months...had job offers in Netherlans and Denmark...and almost thew it in again...can you imagine trying to learn either of those languages, knowing how hard german is! Im in fo the long run now, and am counting down the time until I came become nationalised as a German!!

How long have you been here now...because things will only get better...!!! Johnny Depp wil take your mind off everything!

Im quite looking forward to it...

"Tim Burton's film, his best for a good while, is an eye-popping feast of gore underscored with disturbing, dissonant ballads. It opens with a rain of blood and ends with a subterranean slaughter that would make Freddy Krueger wince. It's a grimy concoction from Hell's own kitchen, laced with black humour and seasoned with hauntingly beautiful music."

Sounds like my type of film...I hope the others are prepared...It shuold complete my gore filled weekend, of Tarantino's 'Death-Proof', Rodriguez's 'Planet Terror, and the Classic Cameron's ALIENS!!

I love horror films! :D

Carm when did you leave Winnipeg? Just a question of curiosity. I don't find I miss home at all, however I moved around a fair amount as a child within Canada. The only time I find the feeling is when you have an incredibly still night, temperature in the low twenties, high humidity and the slight taste of salt in the air. It reminds me of the summers when I got to take over my parents place in St. John's while they were in British Colombia and a bunch of us 'fresh' out of high school had a some of the most memorable fun ever. That is what I'm missing, but that will never happen again. Oddly enough I love Newfoundland, but would never want to live their again. I enjoy my life and the opportunities elsewhere much more. Newfoundland is just to isolated.

I wouldn't want to live in Munich, here in Freising and before that in Regensburg I got to know the people of the community and they knew me. I have a hard time going anywhere without running into people in town without running into people I know and stopping to chat. I must admit I really like that. Makes for a very pleasant day.

I'm curious to know if it's more of the single people who find themselves being homesick, or if those who moved here with or for their significant other are also homesick?

For my part, I live in a small town in the south-west, with not much to do on the weekends - I find myself becoming homesick more often when I have nothing to do (relatively speaking) than when I am in a larger city with relatively more opportunities...
