Posted 11 May 2009 How about one of the outdoor beer garden/cafes in Schwetzingen or the Weldebrau beergarden? The doggies can lie under the tables. A few folks mentioned last night how much they like Schwetzingen... Sorry we didn't get to meet everyone. I think next time we need to get the babysitter to come a bit earlier. A few of my coworkers apparently make it a regular habit of going to Weldebrau. I was invited yesterday to join them in "beer heaven" but I had a lot of stuff to catch up on so I didn't make it. I'm really not picky about where as long as I can bring my pup (which I know a lot of places allow, but I probably won't be too brave about it until I know some German and can understand if someone yells at me). Especially staying in a guest house, where he is in his crate when he's alone, a few extra hours of crate time after a workday starts to add up.

Posted 12 May 2009 I wouldn't mind a barbecue either, if the weather's good... Depending on how many people are interested, we may want to organize a couple of grills (or one large one )
Posted 12 May 2009 My vote is for the barbeque. And the beer garden. But the beer garden we can just throw together any time. The next thing we should plan is the barbeque. Great setting, easier to talk to everyone, (hopefully) great food, and a heck of a lot less expensive.
Posted 12 May 2009 Well the next mannheim meet could be BBQ on the Neckar then stubble over Kurplazbrücke to City Beach. Can you bbq anywhere in HD or is it all now banned?
Posted 12 May 2009 I like the BBQ idea. I'll think of organizing drinkies in HD at some point too... I have no idea about BBQ in HD, I wasn't living there for much of last summer...
Posted 12 May 2009 Well the next mannheim meet could be BBQ on the Neckar then stubble over Kurplazbrücke to City Beach. Can you bbq anywhere in HD or is it all now banned? just so that the newbies are not confused, the Neckarwiese is the grassy area in Heidelberg where it is still permitted to bbq in designed areas. The Neckar also flows through Mannheim. The most popular area to bbq in Mannheim is at the Rheinpromenade. There is still a designated area here and it gets crowded (and dirty) quick. The Neckarpromenade is also a popular area along the Neckar in Mannheim to hang out, walk your dog, jog, etc. But note, officially is not allowed to bbq at either of these areas in Mannheim. That is the only thing that bothers me - too many people go down to those places, bbq, make a huge f*cking mess and it looks really gross afterwards. Ah well.
Posted 13 May 2009 Hi Everyone, It was nice to meet you all last Friday. I could not introduce myself to everyone since I had to leave early. But I am Ravi, from India, work in BASF and live in MA. Looking forward to the next gettogether. Anyone interested in some other outdoor activities..hike etc? Ravi
Posted 13 May 2009 My vote is for a beer garden, at least if it's going to happen in the next couple of weeks. Barbecue would be nice, too, but maybe when the weather is a little more dependable for being sunny and when there is not a holiday weekend coming up - then again, I don't know if most people here get American and/or British holidays (looks there's no summer holiday in late May for Germans).

What distances are you talking?
Posted 13 May 2009 Hiking this time of year is great. Plenty of good walking in the Pfalz, Odenwald, &c. For me 10 km with a glass of wine at the end or en route is perfect for a laid back weekend wander, or were you thinking of something more hardcore?
Posted 14 May 2009 Definitely up for hiking. What distances are you talking? Like Ferkel said, a day hike of 10-15 kms. Dont have a car, so limited to trail heads accessible by public transport.
Posted 14 May 2009 There are alot of transport-accessible routes. Two nice and accessible bits of routes are: The Weinstrasse route in Pfalz is excellent. Grunstadt to Bad Durkheim to Diedesheim to Neutstadt &c. Also the Bergstrasse, Shriesheim to Weinheim to Heppenheim to Auerbach to Zwingenberg &c. (sorry if some of those place names are incorrectly spelt) There are some special expresszug trams and extra trains for the weekends and holidays from Easter until the autumn. Also, last year Deutsche Bahn did a small free Wanderführer (walking guide) with local routes that you can get to on DB.

Posted 14 May 2009 Hey guys. Just checked the weather and Saturday looks like light rain. I was going to suggest a little hike up to a favorite hutte of mine and then there's a small wine fest here in Neustadt (Haardt). I'll probably do it anyway, so keep it in mind if the weather's nice and you've got nothing else going on.
Posted 14 May 2009 Sounds interesting...is there a start time and place? Would be an enjoyable way to spend a Saturday. DM

Posted 17 May 2009 Hey All, I don't know about you, but meeting every couple of weeks (or fortnight ) is a little sparse for me ... I would like to propose a once-a-week venue - especially since summer is here - if that would appease the masses... what say you? I am single with a yellow lab and need more than every couple of weeks - call me needy BTW, I am Troy, nice to meet everyone on our last meet-up ...
