What's the deal with the dog poo everywhere?

33 posts in this topic

I love how Berliners seem to love their dogs and allow then nearly anywhere, although not so sure about the off-leash thing. I have a dog and I always pick up her excrement when she goes outside. I am taken aback by how many people here don't do this. There are big steaming dog turds absolutely everywhere on the streets here! Dog owners just don't seem to bother to pick up after their dogs.

I'd have thought Germany'd be the sort of country where people would be fined for not clearing up after their dog but it doesn't seem that way. What's with all the dog turds? Is it just a Berlin thing or is it a German thing?

I live near Stuttgart and I along with other dog walkers pick up after my dogs. There isn't a fine here but in Koln there is if you don't pick up after your dogs. Its a courtesy thing, pick up after your dog so the next person doesn't have to tiptoe around all the dog crap.

I've noticed this, too. Amsterdam is clearly the dogcrappiest city on the planet ... but half the dog walkers are probably completely baked in the first place, so one can somewhat understand.

However, the very same germans who lovingly washe out three different colors of glass and discard the lids before putting them in the recycling monsters can't seem to see fit to grab a plastic bag out of the multiple stainless steel dog poop stations at the head of a trail near me.

I think it's a bit like the diving like a moron on the autobahn and indoor restaurant smoking ... it's seen as one of the few unalienable rights in an otherwise preposterously overregulated land.

Or, the more I think about it, maybe they're such hypochondriacs (here comes a draft ... run for the air raid shelter!) they're squeamish about handling turds.

The sidewalks of Aachen are also covered in poo, as were they in Erfurt when I was there a few months ago.

a few of us got together in the neighborhood and started planting flowers and posting tree signs+extra bags encouraging owners to pick up their dog shit. It's no longer socially acceptable to leave your dog shit behind. This has helped and its quite rare to find it now. See if you can strike up something similar.

Good idea. I'll try to start up something similar.

The turds are just so HUGE as well. [shudders]

Dog shit is everywhere in Germany. The city is irrelevant. What does matter is that Germans love their dogs more than their own children but cannot be reduced to picking up feces since the foreigners who are stealing all the jobs should be doing that.

You've completely put my thoughts into words...

Umpteen bins to sort household waste but feel free to kill me, my wife and my children with your second hand smoke, dangerous driving and broken glass (OK not probably not kill). Why do they break the bottles? Don't they know they're worth money??? Or they could just sell beer in cans instead. I still prefer Berlin to London. At least I won't get blown to smithereens on the tube one day.

They're just doing their part to save the planet.

Dog poop is bio-degradable. Whereas the plastic bag used to pick up the poo would take years to decompose.

Although some of the poo is so large, it takes longer for it to naturally disappear. I've been living here for over four years and I swear there's one turd near my apartment that's been here longer than me.

It's a hundred Euro fine if you don't pick your dog's shit up in the city I live in. They even have a great poster illustrating this fact. I really need to get a picture of it.

I always pick my dog's poo. I've been yelled at while my dog was in the process of taking a poo. "you better clean that shit up!"

I'd say maybe 50% of the locals don't pick up their dog's crap. It sucks when you're wearing sandals and you step in it. It just happened to me the other night.

Best story I have to relate about dogs in Germany: My buddy and his wife came to visit from Portland, OR, a very dog-friendly city. We were walking my dog in the park that circles the Alt Stadt which clearly has signs saying your dog must be on a leash. Anyway, This little yippity dog charged my friend, not my dog, and bit him. My friend kicked the dog and the damn thing flew a good 5 meters. The owner of the dog got all pissed off, even though my friend was bleeding. My dog got pissed because he could see I was pissed and started growling at this guy. The guy made a mock attempt to kick my dog and that's when I had to get physical with him.

My dog is usually very nice. He doesn't like old mean people though. He really doesn't

Sounds like the dog and its owner had taken some pretty strong drugs. What idiots.

Hmm... well, here in Hamburg I see the odd bit of dogshit lying about, but compared to what I've seen in England and France where I spend most of my time, it's a lot cleaner over here.

Sounds nice and clean. I don't recall seeing anywhere near as much dog shit in England as here in Germany. France is paved with dog shit as well. It's disgusting. The Germs are so tight-arsed about many things that it surprises me they're not more on the case with cleaning up dog's muck.

He was an old Bavarian guy. My German isn't bad, but listening to him talk...it was like another language.

I'm not so proud of having to push around a 60 year old. He knew we were Americans, however. Sometimes I just don't get it and go with how I feel. It's not always good.

For the most part, my city is pretty clean. There are the occasional 'land mines', but I just equate it with the Turkish retards who spray graffiti on every wall possible. They are both fucking up the community.

I actually caught a Turk spray painting near my garage the other night. I confronted him and the guy painted me a bit. I slammed his head in to the wall and his friends across the street told me to take it easy on him. I then confronted them and they all ran away. I lift a lot of weights, so I'm not a small guy. I couldn't believe how pussy these fucks were though.

Anyway, I hate people that aren't responsible. It drives me nuts.

I certainly find it worse here than Paris, which is apparently notorious for dog poo but I never saw so much as in Berlin. I think we could use a fine so people smarten up!

Sounds like you have quite a bit of testosterone circulating through your veins Beav!!

I'm no Floyd Landis!

I just lift weights a lot. I've been doing it since I was 14. I got a bit fattened up after three knee surgeries, but apparently I still look mean. I hate that. At the bbq I went to Friday, they all said I looked like Lou Ferigno, which scares me. That guy was 'THE HULK'!

I've never taken drugs. Honestly. Okay, I smoked copious amounts of weed in Hawaii and Alaska and Oregon, but yeah, it's bettah than beer :D Never done any steroids though. Shit, I'm too puffy right now. I had a major knee surgery two years ago that I'm still recovering from. Funny thing is, I'm still a better skier than most of these supposed 'pros' out here :) I will prove it on the slopes too.

As far as I know, it depends totally on the quarter, in which you're living.

I lived in north Prenzlauer Berg and the amount of dogshit was literally breathtaking.

I lived in south Tiergarten (in Moabit it's very bad though) and I cannot remember any dogshit.

I lived in (a not so wealthy area of) Wilmersdorf and there was hardly any dogshit around.

I live in Friedrichshain and of course: Piles of dogshit nearly everywhere.

To summon it up: The poorer a district, the younger a district = the bigger amount of dog crap

BUT (believe it or not): It seems to get better. At least in my opinion. When I'm thinking of the late 90s the problem was even bigger, I couldn't walk around in Friedrichshain without looking to the ground... Now there are times there are only one or two piles per hundred meters.
