My Immortal by Evanescence because it was a song I often listened to when my ex-husband and I split.

Luka by Suzanne Vega because it came out the year one of my friends nearly died from a beating by her father.

That I Would Be Good by Alanis Morrisette because it's about unconditional love.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqMY9mMMJKU, one of my all time favorites, just because it is so beautiful and haunting and filled with longing.

Funny, when I read this thread the first time, I couldn't think of any song in particular. I just realized this morning that, for me, it depends on my mood and the song in question.

So, I was on the U-Bahn this morning, mulling my life over, pondering my current situation in life, when Carry On My Wayward Son by Kansas came on my iPod. The first verse came on... As I was listening to the words, I almost lost it completely:

Once I rose above the noise and confusion

Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion

I was soaring ever higher

But I flew too high

Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man

Though my mind could think I still was a mad man

I hear the voices when I'm dreaming

I can hear them say

Carry on my wayward son

There'll be peace when you are done

Lay your weary head to rest

Don't you cry no more

I know that the song is about drug addiction, but the words just seem to fit me somehow at this moment.

Joliet Jake, that was the song I was going to recommend as soon as I saw this thread! Ditto on that.

He stopped loving her today has choked me up for years...

Cool, Cool River & Kodachrome by Paul Simon - not because they're sad, but the music's just overwhelmingly good

Love Song & Tiny Dancer by Elton John, but that's a given

I used to sing "Tiny Dancer" to my little brother when he was six months old. That was 34 years ago, and now he has a Tiny Dancer daughter to hold up and watch her kick her little legs (and huge feet).

Recently, Jim Croce

Memories can be friends,

They can take you to a place

That you never thought you'd be again,

And take you to a face

That you never, ever thought

That you would see again.

It reminds me of my best friend Oksana who died in 1995 four months after moving from Munich to Prague, two weeks before I was going to visit her.

More than just a tear, this song reduces me to a mess every time...hence why I never listen to it. A country song, so of course cheesy and depressing, but I can relate to it on many levels. The last verse is the one that sends me over the edge.

Through the back window of a '59 wagon

I watched my best friend Jamie slippin' further away

I kept on waving 'till I couldn't see her

And through my tears, I asked again why we couldn't stay

Mama whispered softly, Time will ease your pain

Life's about changing, nothing ever stays the same

And she said, How can I help you to say goodbye?

It's OK to hurt, and it's OK to cry

Come, let me hold you and I will try

How can I help you to say goodbye?

I sat on our bed, he packed his suitcase

I held a picture of our wedding day

His hands were trembling, we both were crying

He kissed me gently and then he quickly walked away

I called up Mama, she said, Time will ease your pain

Life's about changing, nothing ever stays the same

And she said, How can I help you to say goodbye?

It's OK to hurt, and it's OK to cry

Come, let me hold you and I will try

How can I help you to say goodbye?

Sitting with Mama alone in her bedroom

She opened her eyes, and then squeezed my hand

She said, I have to go now, my time here is over

And with her final word, she tried to help me understand

Mama whispered softly, Time will ease your pain

Life's about changing, nothing ever stays the same

And she said, How can I help you to say goodbye?

It's OK to hurt, and it's OK to cry

Come, let me hold you and I will try

How can I help you to say goodbye?

How can I help you to say goodbye?

The late great Luke Kelly singing "Scorn not his simplicity"

Scorn not his simplicity

See him stare

Not recognizing the kind face

That only yesterday he loved

The loving face

Of a mother who can't understand what she's been guilty of

How she cried tears of happiness

The day the doctor told her it's a boy

Now she cries tears of helplessness

And thinks of all the things he can't enjoy

Man, the really sad music at the end of each episode of "The Hulk" totally makes me melancholy. So does the sad version of the Rocky theme tune. Well sad. Poor old Rocky.

What else? erm. Oh yeah, the bit in Godfather Part III, where Michael's son plays the Godfather theme tune on a guitar, with lyrics. Deep man, deep.

Cindy Lauper Unhook the stars

Probably shouldn't listen to it though.

Just when everything's in order and good, things fall apart

Just when life should be resolving I'm back at the beginning,

And it comes back to the heart ...

I'm not really sad ... I'm not running, I'm looking ...

Did I tell you I've saved all your letters and cards ...

There's just nothing left for me to do here but unhook the stars ...

Do you remember when I told you all that I could and it seemed like too much ...

Well I was living your life hoping you'd never fall ...

If I held on tight enough ...

And letting go now is like a passport to anywhere ...

With time on my hands I can make a new start ...

I just didn't want to stay here and unhook the stars

I just didn't want to stay here and unhook the stars

Don't worry for me it's just I'm inspired

Waiting in the wings made me drunk with possibility

It rivals my memories ...

Then there´s that song about the valley people killing the mountain people for their treasure in the cave, and it is a paper that says "peace on earth".

"Tell Laura I love her"

"Honey" -- tho I still don´t know what she died of.
