German to U.S. electric power plug converters

10 posts in this topic

I need to be able to charge my mobile and camera while on holiday in the states. These are the only 2 things I will need it for. What is this called in German (so I can do a bit of online searching on German sites like Conrad) and/or where are the best places to find this here in Munich.

Or even better yet, maybe someone might have one they would loan me for 3 weeks :)

Thanks

I once forgot my cumbersome adaptor for my shaver on a trip to US (realised whilst chexcking in in Hamburg)

and picked up a simple adapter at a shop inside Frankfurt airport for 5 Euros.

Since most devices work on 220v/110v its just a physical connection so works for

anything not requiring masses of power - fine for shaver, "handy" (yeuck), camera...

How do I make absolutely sure that my mobile (Nokia 6131) and my camera (canon ixus 40) work on 220/110? I dont want to buy just an adapter, plug them in to charge and blow them.

Look on the power adapter of each device. There should be a label which states what input voltage the adapter supports, if it says 110/220 or something similar then you just need a plug adapter. I can lend you one if you need. If it says that it only supports 110, then you need a power converter. Those I guess you could get at Conrad.

If you take euro-powered devices to the states, you don't risk blowing them up.

ssuming your bricks/adapters/chargers can handle 230 and 110V, you only need a two-pronged plug adapter.

Stores like Karstadt, Kaufhof and various online stores carry them.

Look for "Reisestecker", "Travel-Adapter" etc.

Taking U.S. electronics over here to Germany, you will most likely need a transformer ("spannungswandler")

European devices won't blow up, that's true, but some may not work properly becuase they don't get enough power. Try using a hair dryer that only works at 220 while using a 110 socket. It will just not work, you need a converter anyways.

You should also be sure that the transformer (also often just called a "Trafo") has sufficient amperage for whatever it is you want to use. While the little travel ones are OK for, say, a razor, for bigger more power-hungry electronics, you will need a more heavy-duty one.

If you go to Conrad, though, they can help you figure out what you need.

Correct. If she is just using her handy then an adapter is all she will need. It will take all night to charge up but it will.

All you need is a plug adapter. That is it. Want to borrow one, then PM me. I have several. Just so long as you are not travelling at the same time that I am. The real cost then are a few euros versus a trip out to Freimann or some mutual meetup in between.

She didnt write HAIR DRYER. She wrote "MOBILE (phone) & CAMERA".

No issue - with straight connector I ran shaver & charged camera/Camcorder no trouble.
