Today I did something stupid

Gute Besserung, Dessa! You sound as dumb and incorrigible as me!馃槀馃槱

If it鈥檚 any consolation, I made a cup of tea this morning. Poured the hot water and a drop of milk into the cup, retired聽to the sofa.. and realised I鈥檇 forgotten to put the tea bag in...

Do you know what disposable means?

Ouch! I hope it heals soonest.

I broke a fingernail all the way across deep into the quick the other day. It bled like hell. I will have a plaster on it for weeks just holding the tip of the nail on until it is safe to pull it off. Too deep for cutting. I had no idea how much I use my left index finger.

How did I do it, you ask. Had some stones in my sneaker while聽 out walking so took it off and shook it out. My feet were sweaty so it wouldn't go back on easily. I was pulling the heel up with my finger and SNAP.

Let's face it. We're all stupid.

:lol:聽I know what disposable means, but I also know what "an entity of non-biodegradable garbage the size of North America swimming around in the Pacific means" plus what "it's dumb to throw away things that have waaaay more life in them" means.聽 It's why I reuse freezer bags, aluminum foil and baking paper.聽 Not because I'm too cheap to throw it away.聽 But because it is still perfectly good and usable!聽 Sharpening a disposable razor takes a couple of measly seconds and extends the life of the blades immensely.聽 In fact I sharpen my razor before each use, not because it won't shave if I don't, but for the same reason I sharpen my big chef's knife once a day--it makes for much better, safer, and more easily聽controlled cutting!

No, sharpening the blades was not where I messed up.聽 Sharpening them and THEN trying to poke out some little hairs with a NAIL BRUSH OF ALL GODFORSAKEN THINGS while apparently holding the freshly sharpened blades against my thumb was where I messed up.聽 But yes--the absurdity of cutting聽myself sharpening a thing that costs nothing and is meant to be thrown away was not lost on me!

Speaking of stupid, the last time I tried manslaughtering my thumb, dishwashing was hell because I tried to get it done without getting the bandage wet, which was awkward at best and a complete failure at... most.聽 After having tried wearing the finger condoms and latex surgical gloves and the water always getting聽through to the wound more or less immediately, and everything kept slipping out of my hands, I gave up and accepted that I'd be crippled AND the bandage would need to be changed聽by the time I was finished washing up.聽 Today I was smurt and remembered that I do in actual fact own KITCHEN GLOVES, like the big yellow slip-resistant rubber ones, have owned them since forever, and there was no reason for me to suffer and cramp the last time I chopped off my thumb.

Going down the stairs about an hour ago, I misjudged where the next step was and was sent flying, narrowly missing bashing my head against the open door.

Funnily enough, I had just listened to Going Home by a piper ( which is a funeral song!)

Message to myself- take care, babe.馃槀

And stop listening to self-prophesysing聽tunes!!

It was a close shave and I landed on the hard floor in front of Nicole, who was shocked. She had just gone down the stairs because she had heard a couple of cats 鈥 arguing 鈥 聽in the patio聽and I followed her, clumsily.

By the way, this ageing process... takes courage. And better eyesight...馃槖

BTW you may not be into this, but doing some strengh training can make a big difference.聽 We lose a lot of muscle as we age.聽 I am not talking 5 mile runs or pumping iron.聽 聽Helps with balance too.聽 And when you do take a tumble you are likely to do less damage!

I was always a bit worried about my dad with his bad eyesight聽at my parental home. The stairs were a bit tricky. He never fell thankfully, because he walked up that stairs 46 years and knew every square inch blindfolded.

At the moment, Voltaren is my best friend just underneath the kneecap on both sides. Have not applied it to to my middle finger on the right hand ( worried in case one of the dogs decides to go on a licking tour!)

Normally, cars speed past us on the main road here despite it being a residential area and full of old people.

That annoys me- though I am used to it.

Trying to cross the road this afternoon with the dogs, I felt impatient that one particular car was moving so slowly, almost at snail鈥檚 pace.

鈥 Get a move on, man.鈥

As it passed and I started crossing the road, I looked more carefully at the car from the back.

It was a hearse.

I felt guilty...

Well, I passed this nugget on to Paps, who this week decided to google the idea, found a suggestion involving a denim strop, and one old pair of jeans later, here's one 'disposable' item that will probably not need replaced in his lifetime. No-one has emptied the bathroom bin/bucket thing in, I don't know, forever? (not sure most of us knew we had one) so he fished out whole trays of old ones, and now, like you, sharpens every day and has so far not tired of sharing his joy.

Thank you for that - hope your thumb is thoroughly mended聽:)

Wasn't there a patent (in Czech ?) for a model of the pyramid of Cheops

that worked as a razorblade sharpener ?

I remember reading a book "Supernature" as a youth in the '70s.

Was all described back then - and now you've hit my archive-retrieve button...

You simply left the razor inside the model overnight.

Next day - apparently - good as new.

PS

I have a beard - don't聽ask me if it really works...
