Why are you unhappy today?

It was supposed to be simple- hop on the bus and in 15 minutes be at Nicole's son's place, laden with presents from Crete, including for Nicole's grandson.

I got on the bus and at one stop the electronic sign said " this bus stops here. All passengers please disembark."

So I did - but the bus continued. Ok, can't be far. It was so hot and sweat filled my eyes. I could hardly see where I was going. I phoned the son and also his partner 3 times and sent a message. No answer. I had forgotten the house number.

One hour later:

I got to the correct street but still couldn't remember the house number.

I was at the wrong end of a long street.

Sent a message to Nicole, who gave me the correct house number.

Arrived knackered at the building- fourth floor- no lift😩.

Got upstairs-  " hi, John."

" Wasser sofort, bitte."

It turned out the son's I-Phone was dodgy today and his partner was asleep with the baby.

A bit later, " John, I want to invite you to a great Greek restaurant- it's just around the corner."

So - it was at least 10 minutes away and CLOSED.

" No worries, John. Another good one is just around the corner."

10 minutes later ( at least😩)- we got there and it was also closed.

So bus to town to a different place. Ate.

Moral of the story- if you are 70 and it is 40 degrees, don't try to make common ground with a 35 year old!😂

In our Cretan village yesterday. Nicole brought a neighbour's dog a bone whilst the neighbour's friend stood idly by with a fag in his mouth and a shrug of his shoulders. Sam is BLEEDING.

Neighbour: " ti va kavoume?" ( more or less: so what?)😡

You can tell he never gets exercised. His nails are far too long. Walking with those nails must be painful.

No way to lift Sam! He weighs a ton. The owner should be back home later today and I am sure Nicole will point him that way. It is about 35C there right now and too much for Nicole. We have both pleaded with the owner several times to take care of the dog, Sam. We have even imported special tablets for its joints.

That neighbour's friend has a lovely house and an expensive car. He just doesn't give a damn. His cat was lying poisoned on his veranda a couple of years ago. Nicole spotted the cat, told the guy and he just shrugged his shoulders.

Nicole drove the cat to the vet, paid 50 euros, brought the cat back and the guy didn't even say thank you.

Crete's dark secret. The lack of empathy towards pets. And the notion " let the stupid foreigners do it." 100 per cent fact.

We have known Sam for about five years. He has never once gone walkies. His owner leaves the gate open sometimes so Sam can leave and do his " business " on the street somewhere...

Just heard a podcast from NDR about

Rio de Janeiro being the centre of the slave trade until finally banned in 1880.

A family wanted to renovate their house and found bones whilst digging. The house stood on a slave graveyard of 40.000 people.

Worse to come, they report that the bodies weren't buried as much as discarded, hacked, crushed into available spaces.

And then the authorities were very slow to investigate leaving the house owner to create a small museum out of their own pocket.

Bad enough that the atrocities happened in the past, but that the ideas are still very much in the present.

Really horrifying. Brazil traditionally likes to see itself as non-racist ( partly due to the long standing  influence of a famous sociologist, Gilberto Freyre, and his books ).

But the reality is different. A white guy out jogging is " out jogging". A black guy "is running away " after committing a crime.

A very violent country.
