Update- several dead🙁

Yesterday, we cremated my dad on Mallorca.  He passed away on Saturday evening in hospital from the effects of Parkinson’s disease at age 87.  I landed on Friday and visited him and spoke to him. His voice was very weak and he had lost weight. Basically, he didn’t receive brain signals to eat and drink regularly. To lift your feet during walking. At the end his organs failed. I’m glad though that I was able to see him and speak to him. My brother thinks he waited for me. At a later stage we will throw his ashes together with my mum’s ashes in the Mediterranean Sea. She passed away three years ago.

Thanks a lot for your condolences. Appreciated. I saw him in March for 4-5 days where he was still more talkative and able to spend some quality time.

@ Luke - so sorry for your loss, but also happy for you that your Father waited to see you again! It´s something that will stay with you for the rest of your life!

 

My Mother waited for me to get back to England, and passed away a couple of hours later.

 

I suspect they often wait for somebody to come who will be able to deal with "things" when they go.

I know it hurts like hell at the time, but it´s better for them to be able to go on.

I was in Hamburg when I heard from my brother-in-law that my mum was close to death. Went to Karstadt in Harburg to their travel agent's place and booked a flight that very evening.

At the hospital: brother was in the hospital room ( and he had been there a long time ) and sis had just left the room for a ciggie break.

 

When my mum gave her final breath, my brother had just fallen asleep. I kissed my mum on her forehead and it was over.

Sis came back from her ciggie break.

You only lose your mum once.🙁

I lost my Dad in 2003 and my Mum in 2006. I was fortunate enough to be there with both of them at the end.

 

They made me who I am today. I will never forget that.

You will hurt. You will grieve. It's a tough road to go down. There's no magic answer.

 

But in time you will heal.

 

And then you'll start to remember.

I just needed to search my wifes computer for a tax related document, and whilst looking I found a "letter to the grandchildren she will never meet" that she started to write back in September when she got her cancer diagnosis.

I never knew quite how frightened she was and I've been a wreck all morning. I miss her.

It was supposed to be simple- hop on the bus and in 15 minutes be at Nicole's son's place, laden with presents from Crete, including for Nicole's grandson.

I got on the bus and at one stop the electronic sign said " this bus stops here. All passengers please disembark."

 

So I did - but the bus continued. Ok, can't be far. It was so hot and sweat filled my eyes. I could hardly see where I was going. I phoned the son and also his partner 3 times and sent a message. No answer. I had forgotten the house number.

One hour later:

I got to the correct street but still couldn't remember the house number.

I was at the wrong end of a long street.

Sent a message to Nicole, who gave me the correct house number.

 Arrived knackered at the building- fourth floor- no lift😩.

Got upstairs-  " hi, John."

" Wasser sofort, bitte."

 

It turned out the son's I-Phone was dodgy today and his partner was asleep with the baby.

 A bit later, " John, I want to invite you to a great Greek restaurant- it's just around the corner."

 

So - it was at least 10 minutes away and CLOSED.

 

" No worries, John. Another good one is just around the corner."

10 minutes later ( at least😩)- we got there and it was also closed.

 

So bus to town to a different place. Ate.

Moral of the story- if you are 70 and it is 40 degrees, don't try to make common ground with a 35 year old!😂
