Rügen - island on the Baltic coast

26 posts in this topic

We spent 2 weeks in Baabe (between Seelin and Göhren) this summer. I would definitely recommend it as a base for families with toddlers -  a beautiful, safe beach, peaceful forest, well maintained playgrounds in the town and Göhren. It was nice that the footpath was separate to the bike path from Baabe to Göhren - this wasn't the case to the north of Baabe. There are lots of things to see 15-30mins away by car.

Here's a short BBC video about Prora on Rügen.

The 5km long holiday camp for 20.000 people. Built by the National Socialists but not completed before the war started.

It's surreal to see.

There are 1hr long good dokus in German on youtube. Just try Prora as a

search word.

Last time I visited, some parts are being renovated, some falling down. Was used by Soviets and DDR authorities pre 1990

Well worth a visit if you're on the island.

Yes, Prora was very interesting. There is a section currently being used by the German Youth Hostel association also.

The architectural critic Jonathan Meades had a BBC series on surviving Nazi architecture that made the point that Prora might have been the biggest and the first but it was just a precursor for the resorts and hotels that sprang up all over Southern Europe from the 1950s:

(Segment on Prora is right at the start)

Had to laugh at someone with such short legs mocking "genitally impoverished" statues...
