Okay, I admit, I have become a snob when it comes to scenery. Postcard like Bavarian villages, tidy little mixed farms, Alpine grandeur and screaming down hills – this is cycling in Southern Germany. Alas, as you get further north from Toytown, the snobbery kicks in… but I am getting ahead of myself.

The S-1 deposited me at the outer limits of Munich’s transit system, in Freising (by the way, don’t pronounce it “Freezing”, I was laughed at heartily by a gaggle of Germany Cyclist when I told them that was where I was going; it is more like Fries-zing).

Try pronouncing it the way it's spelt: Frei-sing. Really not that complicated...

In contrast to your experiences, I rather like the stretch between Freising and Landshut and consider it a nice day out. As you rightly point out, Landshut is a very attractive town and definitely worth a visit. From Munich, a good day trip would be to cycle to Landshut (70kms) and get the train back. I just go from Freising to Landshut (40kms) and get the train back from there. A map is helpful because, as you say, the signposting can be a bit dodgy, especially after Moosburg, where the route leaves the river for a few kilometres.
