What can I do in my own garden

A quick question, I have recently purchased a PVC greenhouse, its not huge but big enough to walk into 190x180x160 and its collapsable so that I will only use it for the summer and then store it away. I am now worried that the neighbours (only the one dubious couple ) may complain if I put it up in my garden. I have to look at the side of their house all day through my patio doors as it borders along the garden but I can guarantee that if I erect this on my patio they will kick up a stink. Does anyone know if I have to get permission?

Hmm, leaving all comments about unsightly erections on the patio aside, I think you can put it up.

Our neighbour put a large wooden shed like thing on his piece of land and as far as I can tell there is not much we can do about it. Fortunately it is at the other side of the garden so doesn't really affect us.

There are no doubt rules as to what, where and how large things can be, but if you already have the greenhouse then put it up and see what the neighbours say.

I would just rather be sure that it was OK before I caused any hoo har. Prevention is always better than cure and sometimes its just not worth the hassle. I prefer to be smug and know I was in the right to start with, than have a slanging match. :(

Call your local Rathaus and get them to clarify the situation as there are certain restrictions. Then, fully informed, go and ask the neigbours if they have any objections.

 

As far as I understand you don't need permission to put one up (unless bigger than something like 30m³) but it mustn't be nearer than 3m to the edge of your garden, unless your neighbour has some kind of structure close to the border too, in which case you can stick it right on the edge.

As a rule, structures without foundations don't normally need planning permission. Garden sheds and wooden blockhouses usually need planning permission after a certain size. The size is determined both by the floor area in sq. m. as well as the volume enclosed, in cubic metres. In practice, it is usually the volume that is the limiting factor. This regulation falls under the things which are defined by the "Länder" and perhaps even the "Gemeinde" - I'm not quite sure about that. Either way you need to enquire locally what the rules are that affect you.
