Suggestions for prepaid / 1 month subscription mobile contract (2023)

19 posts in this topic

I need to get a phone for my son and I would appreciate suggestions. We only use prepaid SIM from Lyca (we were planning to stay only for 3 year) but I was wondering if things like number portability make some other offers more attractive.

I use Deutschland Sim. I pay €5 a month for 500 mb. it works for me. of course, cancel every month.

there is probably a better deal out there...

We recently moved my father in law away from his expensive O² tariff to sim.de (uses same Telefonica network anyway!). He has a monthly contract there and porting the number from O² worked flawlessly. So far so good.

We have our kids on Aldi Talk, it runs on Telefonica which is technically the worst network, but so far so good. They have 2GB LTE data for 5 EUR every 4 weeks. The have bigger plans but we intentionally want to keep them on that one. Aldi Talk has a much better "combi" plan with 6 GB 5G data and flat minutes and SMS for 9 EUR.

AFAIK portability is not an issue with any provider for normal consumer numbers.

Slightly different question but is it still possible to get a pay as you go prepaid card, I don't need a phone, without subscription, i.e something you can top up with €20,- when it runs out.
Any recommendations?

I have a second mobile with Lidl Connect (I just use it to call drug dealers and ladies of the night) 😉

@keith, following I think Panda's suggestion, I went with Vodafone CallYa and it's been good. It allows you to use some of your prepayment for data if you quickly want to use t'internetty for something.

My wife has the €9.99 Vodafone CallYa and I've got dual SIM Vodafone and the Telekom Prepaid €10 option. We're at home most of the time so it really is enough. Unlimited calls/texts and I think 3GB of data a month. The Telekom SIM offers WIFI calling which is important for me working in the cellar with no cell network - I can still get calls!

Mine is not anything per month, I just got the card and top it up as required. I got it off Amazon.

Vodafone Prepaid CallYa Classic SIM-Karte ohne Vertrag I 5G Netz | 9 Ct. pro Min oder SMS in alle dt. Netze & die EU I 3 Ct. pro MB I 10 Euro Startguthaben

Looks to be only 6,99 for the card at the moment, with 10€ guthaben. Complete bargain 👍🏽📱

I have no Vertrag or card with my CallYa. Just throw some money in when my balance gets below €3. Comes out to about €9.99 per month. No muss no fuss. Plenty of data for me when I use wifi at home. Only need data for info when I'm out of the house. Transportation, checking messages and such.

As info, those pre-paid plans work better when you have a data plan. If you choose no data plan (just phone calls paying minutes on the go) then you have to keep the data setting off all the time. Activating data with no plan is horribly expensive, just in a few minutes you will eat all your balance.

Yes - I am almost always in Wifi range so it's free, and for me this ohne-Vertrag thing is way cheaper, but if there was an expectation of needing regular data use then absolutely a plan is going to be better.
I've put about 20 quid on it in 6 months.

Most of the other SIMs don't seem to allow use of data without a plan at all, which is why I went with CallYa.

Tech dinosaur here. How do you know if your SIM card is G4 compatible ? Have G4 abo but no internet connection without wifi. Never had it. Only now it bothers me.

I have checked all mobile data phone settings and all other obvious stuff you find on the internet to no avail. By a process of elimination I wonder if my decade old card is the problem. Yes I removed it and cleaned it too.

Are you paying for data? Do you have a phone that is 4G compatible? (it should be if your phone is not older than 10 years)
