shipping heirlooms internationally

4 posts in this topic

Hello all,

my daughter is getting married, and would like to use my grandmother's engagement ring. I now need to get it to her (DE to USA). I know that it has to be insured, and sent with a signature authorization, but after that, I'm lost. I've checked the FedEx website - there's no info on shipping w/o a customs declaration (should not be needed, as is a personal heirloom over 100 yrs old). UPS will not ship. DHL? Anyone have experience/recommendations? Thanx in advance, -b

Congratulations on your daughter's engagement!

What makes you think a commercial shipment to the U.S. with a family heirloom is exempt from a customs declaration?  I have shipped many packages from Germany to the U.S. using DHL, FedEx, and UPS, and all required a customs declaration regardless of content or value.  Nothing I shipped to the U.S. was assessed duties.

Hi, thanks for responding. I was reading too many open apps at the same time.
Yes, there's always a customs declaration needed, but I was concerned about the assessed value.

Years ago I was involved with a wedding in the US, and the groom had written home (to Germany) to have his sisters send him his (already owned) Tracht, which they did. The Post Office levied duty on the items; it was a fight to get them to waive the tax. Which they did, finally.

Granted, this was many years before internet shipping was so common.

I've looked at all above mentioned. UPS will not ship jewelry. FedEx's website deals with companies, not private individuals (info must be well hidden).

But thank-you for your time.

Follow-up: finally sent the package DHL. Could insure, could not request a signature (letters only). Did get there safe & sound, but had my heart in mouth until it did.
