How to get the BBC World Service in Berlin?

42 posts in this topic

I have a digital radio which I purchased in the UK. I can get the BBC World Service on it and that is great. But the charger has packed up and I am now using batteries. In the long run this is wasteful and damaging to the environment.

I have been down to Saturn and Media Markt to find a new charger, but as the radio is from the UK , they do not  stock such a charger.

I would gladly buy a new one but when I try to get the BBC World Sevice on these radios while in the store, I get nothinhg but static.Any advice.?

I have looked at rechargable batteries but they seem expensive.

Thanks

Check the output of the damaged charger and find a similar with a similar plug.  If you are confused you can put a picture of the charger here.

1) try using an internet radio / your PC here : https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/live:bbc_world_service

2) search Amazon for the output volts / amps / watts on your broken charger. Check that the charger output plug has the same fitting.

3) you'll want a charger / travo that runs on 230v (or anywhere between 210v and 260v) Berlin and London are both on 230v these days (240v went away a long time ago)

I tried "variable trafo" on Amazon.de and came up with this :

https://www.amazon.de/PChero-Universal-Steckernetzteil-Elektronik-USB-Ger%C3%A4te/dp/B071S77653/ref=sr_1_3_sspa?__mk_de_DE=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&crid=11KA43PQKH6YP&keywords=variable+trafo&qid=1680256244&sprefix=variable+travo%2Caps%2C83&sr=8-3-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1

which is this thing:
lots of plugs for your radio to choose from and the ability to change voltage (to your 6v)

Or maybe ask for such a device at Saturn/Media M where they can show you how it works?

That is odd.  I cannot check as not in Berlin, but also do not have a radio that works atm.  In Berlin it is supposed to be on FM 90,2.  Can anyone else check?

While I think the best option is to get an adaptor that works or get your old adaptor fixed, you could also consider just buying a new digital radio in Germany, cannot see any reason why it will not work to get the World service.

Maybe you can pick one that has features you miss from your old radio

A simple search shows many such radios.

I am happy to buy a new radio, but I need to know I can get the BBC World Service before I buy the radio.

In my flat I also have an old radio and when I tune it to the BBC frequency 94,8.MZ I get nothing. This creates confusion .

Is 94,8 MZ digital or not. This may help in selecting the right radio.

I have looked at some of the radios suggested by yesterday and thery all seem to have something called DAB and DAB1. Is this what I need or will I buy a super duber radio that does not give me what I want.

BBC World Service not being broadcast on DAB outside of UK.

BBC WS say Berlin is 90,2 FM.

List for DE here.
