child to travel with Oma

7 posts in this topic

My Mum (resident in Italy) plans to take my 13yr old daugther (resident in Germany) with her to holiday, trip from Italy to Norway (via Germany) and back, during school sommerferien, Kreuzfahrt in Norway. We support this.

They have different family names, and even visibly different ethnicity (my Mum caucasian, my daughter half asian).

Question: should we expect challenges at the borders, like they fear the child is being kidnapped? Any suggestion?

Just give your mom written permission together with copies of both parents's IDs/passports to show to police in the unlikely event she'll be asked for it.

Good advice so far. How lovely of your mother to take your daughter on such a holiday. I had issues leaving Germany with my daughter when she was young to return to our UK home. She is half Asian and questioning once led us to missing a flight. Since then, I travelled with copies of both of our birth certificates and my UK child benefit certificate. This helped a lot. Maybe relevant for other people in such a situation.

Maybe, as an additional measure, your daughter could travel with a copy of your birth certificate and hers that helps identify your mother as your daughter’s Oma? Just add as much info as possible…proof of home address, parent contact info etc.

All the best.

My policy is to always have an updated letter and copies of my son and DIL’s passports when accompanying my Armenian-Germerican granddtr in/out/inside of Schengen cuz border guards can ask for ℹ️ at any time.  I’d rather be safe than sorry.  Checking has been inconsistent, but when asked I was always prepared and had no hitches.  (We each have US passports and the same family name, but her pass shows born in Yerevan, and unlike me she looks Eurasian.)

The ADAC have a series of forms, for kids travelling alone, with one or the other parent, or with someone else:

Up to 11 different languages too.

ADAC Reisevollmacht

I used these when I traveled alone (outside EU) with my eldest son. I also took a copy of my wife's passport. And these were checked by border staff upon leaving.

Hope they have a nice time. Very nice of your mum to take the kids on holiday.

When my children travelled with their Oma, they had their passports, plus something the German's call "Muttizettel"

(HH Sailor posted something similar above from the ADAC which contains excellent information)

Below is another link with information (in German) for what you may need.

Also what is useful is an insurance for Auslandskrankenversicherung. Normally it is quite reasonable. We pay about €30 per year for the whole family.
