Kaufhof to close another 52 shops

The Kaufhof in Würzburg will survive whereas the one in neighbouring Schweinfurt will close. I guess a big part of the reason is that in Schweinfurt they built a shopping mall, whereas in Würzburg the building permit for a planned one was refused (thankfully). Malls are as much a threat to inner cities as online shopping. More needs to be done to protect inner cities,  if need be introduction of special tax for online shopping and a ban on malls.

Maybe but you can hardly compare that with a major city. In Munich parking is expensive but it is far more convenient to use public transport to reach the city centre. The city dwellers may do their food shopping in the city but those travelling in from further out are looking for the speciality shops and major stores like Kaufhof so it is very sad that so many have had to close. Contrary to what @john g. said there is still good shopping all round Marienplatz although to the North (Maxi.str) is pretty much only for the very rich but I do agree with him that the Hauptbahnhof area is a mess, even a lot of the sex shops have closed, but it always was seedy.

Its not just the sex shops, but almost all of the electronic shops have gone. In the early 1990's Saturday morning was spent looking at all the electronic components that could be bought, then assembling something in the afternoon. Now even Konrad has shut down in Tal, which used to be near the Hauptbahnhof.

Its not just the city centre, I went to St Pattricks day thing last weekend, started off with  a bit of a walk a round Schwabing, almost all of the places I used to out to in the evening are now shut, many replaced by slot machine gambling places. ie shenanigans, Sunset, gunter murphys, Tomato bar, Roses bar.

I am very sad that Conrad has gone (also at OEC) and I believe they have closed almost all their retail shops. The electronic and computor shops near the Hbf. began to disappear years ago even Burklin went, I think that is more a sign of the times and changes in technology rather than the decline of the city centre. Irish pubs were a big trend way back, the bubble burst but some still survive and seem to do good business.
