Kaufhof to close another 52 shops

23 posts in this topic

do not why, but it makes me sad...

Many big shops in Munich have shut or be joined together, seems as though the high street is dying, I never thought it would happen in Munich

Kaufhof hauptbahnhof, is shutting down, the big shop kaufhof has.

How long will it be before the rest shuts down ??

It doesn‘t surprise me, but Kaufhof Marienplatz will remain open. I don‘t go there often, but it‘s always packed with people incl. the high-end supermarket with espresso bar, champagne bar, etc.

In neighbouring countries large department stores have already disappeared some years ago. My hometown Arnhem in the Netherlands had three, now zero.

Yes, sad to say but department stores seem to be a thing of the past with their demise accelerated by covid and online shopping. Lots of other medium and small shops have closed or are closing too, high rents in Munich aren't helping.

Yes.  Jeff’s Department Store really changed things, some for better, and some for worse.  Change happens.

We have 2 very close to each other here, so not surprising on is going.  But sure it is sad.  I realise that a lot of shopping is online now.  But at least they had stuff that was reasonably priced and some was not hideous, though the colour range was weird last year.  But they had somewhere cheap to eat, and toilets, which were not that clean, were better than the free ones at the bus stop.

Quelle, Neckermann, Hertie. Woha, DeFaKa, Horten, KaDeWe.

All distant memories. They are and were post war institutions and their time is simply up. Kaufhof has been dead a long time, it just didn’t know it.

KaDeWe is still around 👻. One of the biggest in Europe. It’s a flagship store.

Harrods in London used to be fun.  Food hall fantastic.  But Al Fayed took over and becaome all snobby, and banned scruffy people.  Road sweeper gang I was in used to buy their (excellent) bacon there, in our plebby overalls.   Does KaDeWe have a dress code? I think Harrods have backed down a bit.

Oh yes, this.

We were over and wanting to go in there to show the kids and had to go buy a pair of trousers so Paps could get in - shorts or jeans were the problem, can't remember which. Why not the road sweepers - its a blooming shop after all.

I don't remember KaDeWe having a clothing policy - we visited a few years back, but someone from Berlin would know for sure. Wouldn't seem very German to have such a thing.

We lost our Herties in town a long time back, and it is sad, because it was a handy place to get stuff. The whole life of the high street has altered to coffee shops, cafes, nail bars and a few Tedi/ Woolies type cheaperies. It is what it is. Life is different now, and shops/shopping must change.

When I lived in West Berlin from 1986-88 there was no dress code there.  Went occasionally for specialty items, like yams for Thanksgiving.

Sorry, yes of course. It is still there but a shadow of what it once was.

It was mad.  Al Fayed is a creep.  I do not know of anywhere else that had a dress code.

Not even to talk about Woolworths, long time ago dead.

Galleria Kaufhof in Rotkreuzplatz is still open.

yeah I think kaufhof just want one main Kaufhof in the city center, so last year the one at Karlsplatz got the bullet, and this year the Hautbahnhof one will close, I think the one in Münchner freiheit will remain open and the one at the OEZ will remain open as well, but I guess thats it for Munich.

I known its just change, but I like to see difference in shops in different places, now all our high streets have H&M, followed by MacDonalds etc etc

I am not really a fan of internet shopping, I like to go in and look at the stuff I buy myself.

All the millions spent in the nineties to prop up the inner cities has come to naught. Look at Munich, apart from the tourist areas and the streets west of Marienplatz there is nothing, go towards the Hauptbahnhof and you get the usual plethora of Kebab shops, Turkish hairdressers, cellphone repair and gold shop, spiced up with drunks and Romanian beggers.

You can interpolate this trend in any city you like, some more, some less. But the inner cities are dead.

The Karstadt Stammhaus/first department store in Wismar, the sixth-biggest town by population in MacPom, is not closing.

Wismar has 43 000 inhabitants!

..

Berlin Hauptbahnhof is a bit like a department store I think, with shops on various levels selling various goods, eateries too.

Same here in our main shopping street in Harburg. The centre has been dying for years anyway since they built the multi/purpose Phoenix Center. The men 's and women's clothes places- all gone. Karstadt closing down . And what is on the main shopping drag. Discount shops, 99 cent places , Turkish wedding shops ( nothing against them, though ) and kebab here and there and everywhere.

The quality cosmetic shops and jewellers have gone. And a lot of begging.

NOT a vibrant multi-cultural area. Where are the Italian places and the Greek places?

It has become a  predominantly Turkish area with poverty.

Similarly here in Pinneberg.  Why?  Cos the parking in the town centre costs money

& the parking at the outlying supermarkets are free.  People just do not want to pay for parking.

Same situation 40+ years ago when I lived in Cheshire.  In one direction Knutsford has only on-street parking

with parking meters whilst Northwich buld large free car parks for Tesco & Sainsbury & M&S.  Where did the people go?

One result was that Northwich had a vibrant market on Saturdays.

Yet. they thrive in Portugal. Perhaps it has more to do to being shitty in Germany??

I really can't understand how shopping malls and department stores are so bad in Germany. It seems somehow associated with low class, while it's middle-upper class in Portugal. There are some exceptions of course.

Anyway, any dates for closures? Usually good to pick up some cheap Lego's.

Maybe but you can hardly compare that with a major city. In Munich parking is expensive but it is far more convenient to use public transport to reach the city centre. The city dwellers may do their food shopping in the city but those travelling in from further out are looking for the speciality shops and major stores like Kaufhof so it is very sad that so many have had to close. Contrary to what @john g. said there is still good shopping all round Marienplatz although to the North (Maxi.str) is pretty much only for the very rich but I do agree with him that the Hauptbahnhof area is a mess, even a lot of the sex shops have closed, but it always was seedy.
