Posted 25 February Hello all, It's my first time using this forum, but I have actively read a lot of posts here. I just need some help in telling me that it's ok that my test went bad. I did my Telc B1 2 days back. While the listening, reading and writing sections went sort of okay-ish, the speaking section was bad. My exam-partner spoke a little too well, and she kept skipping questions from the prompt. I was caught off guard, and I ended up answering questions that weren't even asked. It wasn't like I had the answers by heart, but I was trying to follow structure. I am a nervous person in general, and my nervousness was already over the roof during the test, I tried to keep calm and speak as much as I could. I ended up uttering stupid things, while she spoke so much, and what sounded like good Deutsch. And I did something stupider during introduction, because again, I was caught off guard. We were meant to answer "how or where we learnt German", she never asked me that question. I ended up answering that question with another question anyway. I said, "I have to speak German at work, and I find that not so great that I have to speak German always". I don't know why I said that. I feel so ughhhh! I don't hate learning German, at all, but I can't deny how taxing it is to do your job WHILE speaking a new language. I caught myself when I said that and quickly moved on from it without really clearing up why I said "it's bad". I'm so scared that it'll reflect on my results, on top of how little I spoke when compared to how much she spoke. I'm just nervous about my result :((
Posted 25 February You "can not do nothing" © about it now, maybe you could occupy yourself with something else instead. And as we say in German: "es wird nicht so heiss gegessen wie gekocht". I think being nervous before exams or in other situations is okay, I guess there is a good reason for it. I did no special preparation for the B1 test apart from living and working in Germany for many years. Passed easy, the only problem was getting up early to be there at 08:00😉

Posted 25 February If you participated and the things you said were mostly grammatically correct and in character with the topics you were given you should do fine. The point about partnering like this is that they have to take in the behaviour of both parties, so they will cut you some slack. As Fietsrad said there is nothing at all you can do about it now, if it was bad then it was bad and you can learn from that for next time. Sorry you had a shitty time, and good luck.
Posted 25 February We took our B1 tests with partners who were probably C1 if not 2, and it showed enormously that they were better than us. This is not a problem since the system is used to non-matching skill levels in the exam - it sounds as though you spoke German and said stuff which made sense, which is about all they need, really. You only have to pass that bit, not do brilliantly. You did have bad luck with a partner who didn't play the game properly, which is on her and not you, but it must feel deeply frustrating. Try to think about something else until the result comes - as the others have said, there is nothing you can change at the moment. Maybe move on with your German as if you have passed it, which at least will occupy that bit of your brain. Fingers crossed and Daumen drucked for a good result.
Posted 25 February Thank you all very much. I will try to keep my mind off it. 4-6 weeks is such a long time :0
Posted 25 February You know now what happens during the test, so if you have to re-take it, or you want to do B2 in the future, you know what to expect. When I have to do something new, I get nervous. E.g. going to a new car wash for the first time. But after doing something once, the second time is easy because I know exactly what to expect.
Posted 16 March Hello again, I am happy to tell you all that I passed my B1, and with very good scores. Perhaps the testers were considerate enough even though I had sort of a difficult partner. I was also pleasantly surprised with how quickly I got my results and dint have to wait 4-6 weeks entirely :)
