Sharing Landlord’s email address/phone number?

11 posts in this topic

Hello everyone!

I'm a tenant in a small apartment building. We received notice that the landlord was changing (giving the building to a relative), and received the new address, bank info etc.

I had to email the old landlord to ask for contact info (email address, phone number) because I needed something. Now I am the only tenant that has this info. Another tenant is asking for it. Is it okay to share this info? Or even just the email address? This tenant has a not-so-great relationship with the old landlord.

I’m paranoid about giving other people’s info out in Germany, and not sure what is allowed or not.

Thanks in advance!

I’ve reached out by email and text message to the landlord asking to share it, but so far no response. The issue is time-sensitive for the tenant, but not an urgent issue

I'm not a lawyer, but I think it would be OK, given that a tenant could request the landlord's adress from the Grundbuchamt (sort of deeds office) anyway.

Thank you very much for your reply! The tenant has the address already, but not the email address and phone number. Would the Grundbuchamt also give out this info as well? Thanks again.

Has the tenant asked the old landlord like you did? Perhaps advise them to do that because you feel uncomfortable giving out personal information.

I'm surprised the new landlord hasn't already given this information to their tenants.

I doubt it. However, if you know name and address, you may find the phone number at https://www.dastelefonbuch.de/.

Be aware, that emails aren't legally binding, so writing a (registered) snail mail letter may be a better option anyway.

It somewhat depends on 'how' you know the email address and phone number of the landlord. If you got it from a business card or some other 'public' means then it's probably fine to share it. If you got it because the landlord gave it to you as a favour then perhaps not.

Personally I find it rude when someone shares my email or phone number so I would do no more than you have done here.

As always depends on how sick the landlord is.

He may say: oh thank you for sharing it so they can pay in time!

He may sue you because GDPR nonsense.

Good luck!

How do you know this?

Thanks so much for all of your replies everyone—much appreciated! I ended up getting ahold of him this afternoon and he asked me to pass on his contact info. He was confused why I was asking—he knows the tenants need this info (but hadn’t yet given it out…🤷‍♀️). I don’t know this new landlord well so I’m glad I was cautious nonetheless. Better safe than sorry!
