Can anyone recommend a vnp?

I would like to access stuff like the bbc iplayer. At the moment I cannot do this , but with a VNP I should. So if anyone can recommend one , I would be grateful. As long as it is not illegal.

Hello Colin: Before I recommend the VPN service I am using in Canada—it should work in Germany; the payment is in USD; I use my PayPal account—it's important to clarify that using any VPN to access the BBC iPlayer is a gray area if you are not resident in the United Kingdom or Northern Ireland, i.e., you are not paying the annual BBC license fee which gives residents access to the BBC iPlayer as part of their license fee. Assuming you are "comfortable" with this level of illegality, once you access the BBC iPlayer for the first time, you will be asked to set up an account. You'll need to select a valid UK address with a postal code; it can be any residential address in the UK. Each and every time you access the BBC iPlayer through your VPN, you will be asked if you have a license. If you lie and say "Yes", you will be allowed to access BBC iPlayer programs. If you answer truthfully "No", you will be denied access in spite of having a working VPN that gives you access to the sign-in page. Outside of using a VPN to disguise your location in a country that hunts down their dissidents like Iran and China, to name two, I don't believe using a VPN is any more illegal then using a fake name when Starbucks insists on writing a name on your coffee cup.

Now for the VPN recommendation: I recommend a Canadian VPN company called, "Windscribe": https://windscribe.com/ It is based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada (where I live) and I have a plan that is only $2.00 USD per month which is the lowest monthly cost you can pay. However, there are a variety of plans and I recommend you peruse their website for what best suits your purposes and budget. In terms of service, it is rock solid so far (I have been a customer since 2020). They never offer any dubious promotions or "special offers" like most of the large big name companies. To sample their service, you can set up an account and use their free option which I believe still gives users a generous 10 GB of free use per month which is more than enough to see if this is the VPN that is right for you.

BBC has been working hard against VPNs, so it is not that easy to find one that works and if it works it might break any time.   BBC current approach is not actively blocking VPNs instead they are filtering the other way around, they only allow access to IPs that are known to belong to UK ISPs.   The VPN I use stop working long time ago and they said they won't play the cat and mouse game anymore with BBC, so basically they gave up.

I am not saying there are no VPNs that work, only that it is not that easy to find one that works like it was before,

Hello Krieg: I am going to copy what I wrote to Colin as a recommendation for a Canadian-based VPN company I have been using since 2020. So far, acess to the BBC iPlayer has been smooth allowing for buffering sometimes when traffic is particularly high on the access I am using.

Thanks for all the info. Would a VPN give me additional benefits? A while ago ,somebody got into my betting account and squandered the lot on silly casino bets. Would a VNP prevent this?

I have said this before on similar threads, please either use the PM system to name vpns etc that are still working or disguise the names sufficiently to fool a machine scan!

You never know who or what is looking at threads like this. To the OP not sure if you named this thread in error or on purpose but whatever well done.;)

No it will just hide your real IP address/location, if someone got into an internet account of yours it was either due to the website having been hacked or you used a very obvious password

Probably not. A VPN prevents someone on the same wifi/lan as you and your internet provider from seeing what you're up to and being able to access any unencrypted data (increasingly unlikely as most websites are secure by default - including this one I see). And it gives you a degree of anonymity if you want to do anything nefarious, although your VPN provider can of course see what you're up to.

Unless it was someone in your house capturing your access to an unencrypted gambling website, then no.

Can you not just "download" the programs?

We are forced to pay for Staatsfunk, I wish that covered the bbc too. But the Staatsfunk programs are just as bad as radio 4 &c

No, downloads from the BBC and most live broadcasts on the internet are geo-blocked (i.e. for UK only). One exception though is BBC Radio 4 which is still open worldwide on the internet.:D

You can use

Get_iplayer to download BBC but you still need a vpn or smart dns etc

It's not illegal, but you are breaking copywriter regulations

ditto BBC Radio 1, 2 and three.   And others too.

Does not work everywhere but last time my satellite dish was working Free to Air had a lot of BBC and other UK TV and a huge assortment of local radio stations amongst the god bothering and porn channels.   Grape vine has killed my dish, and Spiderpig King Satellite is no longer here to tell us what is available.  Anyone still using it?

My VNP works.  But it is not cheap unless you are sharing.  It stopped working for BBC i player.  But when opened in a new browser it was fine.  Crossed fingers for now.   Can someone recommend something on Netflix?  Again, we are sharing (for now).   I have enjoyed a few series (skandi krimis) but so much of it is of no interest to me.  I tried a new one (Totefrau?) yesterday and for me it was just both gruesome and fantastically silly.  Not sure it was meant to be.  Dead bodies piling up, and not in a Breaking Bad kind of way.

Kid#2 bought nordvnp fpr about 50 quid for the year, whilst he was over because he was desperate to show his siblings Plebs and it was only available on Netflix UK.

It's good so far. Not used it for iplayer because of the repeated lies necessary.

My internet browser is set up for very strong privacy, add-blocking, private browsing etc so I know what you mean but I use an alternate browser though only for viewing the beeb, for example the default settings for Edge (history and cookies not cleared) will remember your login details and responses usually for several months so it should go straight to the meat if you use a bookmark after the initial viewing!

I will not be  continuing with my VPN quest. Too damm complicated. I will remain contented with the BBC World Service. There are some good programms and it is so relaxing to listen to the radio and give my eyes a rest.

A good examle is

The Force of Google

in which the dubious practices of Google are explored such as directing searches to their own products.

It's actually not complicated at all.  I use NordVPN. Works well with iplayer.  Getflix is another option as mentioned earlier.
