Posted 30 Dec 2022 Hi all, Is there any legal time limit in Germany for an energy supplier to send an invoice to a customer for energy used? In the UK it's 12 months. You do not owe the energy supplier anything if they issue you with the invoice more than 12 months after consumption (https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/information-consumers/energy-advice-households/check-energy-back-billing-rules) Background: I have not received an energy invoice or bill from SWM since December 2020, despite having an active SEPA and meter readings having been taken by both myself and the energy supplier. It's clearly a screw-up on their end, possibly connected to multiple faulty meters they installed. My only interest is: for how long after energy consumption can a service provider legally require payment from the customer? Presumably there are broader consumer laws also governing this. Thanks
Posted 30 Dec 2022 According to Stromkosten & Verjährung: Wann verjährt die Stromrechnung? (strom-report.de) it's not perfectly clear but the expiry on claims is normally 3 years from the end of the year you used their services. However, it may be longer if they never actually sent you a bill, see Wann Stromkosten verjähren - rechtsanwalt.com
