How's Altenburg, a beautiful preserved old town for living?

3 posts in this topic

I just discovered this town of 33k people in Thuringia. It has a thousand year history and it survived the wars unscattered.

It looks really amazing architecture-wise:

I wonder if one can live there and commute to the other, larger cities nearby for work?

Altenburg is located 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of Leipzig, 90 kilometres (56 miles) west of Dresden and 100 kilometres (62 miles) east of Erfurt.

It has a cute old town:

No, traveling thousands of kilometers a year to and from  work makes no sense. One should seek a dwelling near work.

Altenburg has been known for unpleasant political demonstrations, some people living there dislike strangers.

I have been to Altenburg a few times as a tourist and really liked it. I stayed at the Parkhotel which not only allows dogs but actually welcomes them. I remember it as quite green and "cozy" for lack of a better term. However, as in many areas in Eastern Germany, there might be some unpleasant political developments. It would definitely be prudent to research a bit more.
