Still interested to know how did Police find you? Did you give your name and address to bus driver, which I believe not. Did they track and find you from the bus camera, but I believe this is not China.

Maybe the bus driver knows enough about the guy to find out his name. Hops off bus same time every day and goes into same kiosk/kabab shop/bakery, whatever... or a fellow stasi passenger... or he left more than dog hair on the seat... the world can be a small place.

or after everything was said and done the bus driver demanded to see an ID card and he complied. Occam's Razor*

*how many “normal” people actually run away from authority instead of showing the ID if for example caught without a ticket? I’d wager an insignificant number, it’s a matter of conditioning that resolves a quick and subconscious benefit/cost analysis. He also had no clue.

Considering the OP insulted people on here who didn't take his side (telling people to shut up, calling them f'n cowards and telling people they need to have a f'n backbone) I would say that he is well known to the Police in his local area as it seems this is his usual behavior if things don't go his way or people don't agree with him.

The bus driver would have described him to the Police (American, described his and the dog's appearance) along with his behaviour (insulting, name calling) and the Police would have known who it was.

Dont do anything OP. Id totally ignore the letter until it turns into a court summons. It seems they send these as an invitation to come on down to the ol polizei station and explain your half.

The legal system in this country is a joke along with the police that take part in it. Regular Polizei are basically security guards. Ignore it till they knock on your door or you get a letter with a date telling you to be somewhere. If they have to invite you for a chat it means they dont have the authority to make you come in and give a statement. Any contact id tell them you need to talk to a lawyer. Dont explain your half to anyone. Unless you want to pay money

For posterity this is how this Beleidigung case ended:

The police dropped the case because it was frivolous. (I.e it was "eingestellt" as they put it)

For those wondering how the bus driver was able to get my name it is because I filed a formal complaint against DB and the community because of his behaviour.  He responded by claiming I insulted him and tried to pretend that he had the same standing as an actual public official (i.e judge, police officer, or significant city official for which being disrespectful could net you a hefty fine).

To all the negativity this thread got from those who would think you should rather 'accept' disrespectful attitude because of the consequences -> you forget that you are living in a country that has FREE SPEECH laws.  For those that do not speak their mind because they are worried their free speech rights will disappear and be criminalised...this is not the way to live life. Moreover, such actions encourage further disrespectful behavior by those who do it because most people unfortunately do not speak up.

Yep, the driver was disrespectful to you and I would probably have said much the same thing.

However, if you hadn´t been disrespectful in the first place by not checking to make sure your dog hadn´t left a mess or whatever then it wouldn´t have happened. I will go out of my way to be nice to people and help them but the moment they go off then they're fair game for me to be disrespectful.

Respect goes both ways.

I had to bite my tongue so many times when I was a bus driver because basically, the general public are rude idiotic entitled morons on the whole.
