Received a favourable tax estimate

3 posts in this topic

I have some property in Germany but am not resident.

The Finanzamt wrote to me out of the blue in July asking me to fill in tax returns for 2015-2020 which I ignored

They sent a reminder of course in October

Now I've received an estimate for 2015, with a deadline to pay by 28 Dec 2022.

The estimate is actually a bit lower than the actual tax. I'm quite happy to pay it.

I am assuming in just accepting and paying I'm not making a false declaration.

Is this correct, should I just pay their estimate within the deadline?

What do you expect as answer?

Internet support is not legally binding :) so you can't go to FA saying "I did so because somone on internet told me to"

You must take care that you provided all correct information to the FA so they can calculate the correct tax burden. Then you have to pay the owed taxes on the specified time, otherwise you will gt Mahnung ("gently reminders") and incurr in late payment interests

You definitely should stump up. If you are lucky that may keep them happy. But be prepared for them to come back for more. An estimate is just that. If you are double lucky 2015 may be too late for further demands.

Are you sure you are set to pay less than you should ? Presumably you are only partially tax liable in Germany anyway.

Will they do you for tax evasion if you pay less than you should ? It s a gamble. And could sting hard if you lose. Claiming ignorance is unlikey to swing it if they decide you underpaid.

How much value peace of mind and a quiet night s sleep ?

They are on your case. Ignoring them and not filing your tax declarations is clearly not the best way to go. Even the smallest intellects wiil grasp that. You have failed to ask the right questions, although it is understandable. We all hate taxes. And death.

I am not a tax advisor.
