That is part of the reason why mine is excellent.He tells you exactly what you need to have done and will tell you what you could have done but that would cost.

For example I broke a tooth and he said it really needed a crown but that would be expensive but what he could do was repair it which wouldn´t be as good as a crown but would be perfectly acceptable, which he did and it´s lasted 3 years so far with no problems.

This must be 40 or 50 years ago but my dad went to his RAF dentist and the dentist didn´t want to polish his teeth etc because all the years of smoking etc had covered his teeth and after an x-ray the dentist said if he polished and cleaned all the crap off of his teeth then he would need so much work done that it would take months and it would be easier for my dad just to keep brushing his teeth as normal and leave this film and zahnstein on his teeth.

He was right as well as when he left the RAF the 1st civvy dentist he went to told him how much work he was going to need done after the clean and scrape.

I´ve had soooo many problems with my teeth but thank fuck never any problems with my gums.

No problems with my teeth. That can get very expensive. Keeping my gums treated is saving my teeth. No big deal really.

 

My former German dentist never recognized my gum problem, BTW. He also made me a lousy crown which I had to replace.

Dentist(s) are the protagonists in my worst nightmares.

I inherited my father's (too big) bad teeth and my mother's (too small) jaw.

 

Problems from the first day I had my "permanent" teeth all in. Decades of suffering.

 

Until I found a dentist (German, young, female, fresh out of school) in Munich in 1979. She did wonders for my oral health.

Then in 2006 I moved to the US, didn't see a dentist for the first 4 years there because I was too busy doing other stuff.
When I finally got around to looking for a dentist, I listened to recommendations from friends and colleagues. The one I decided on was excellent  - pretty much the same service level that I was used to from my previous dentist in Germany.

 

In 2019 I moved back to Germany - didn't have time to see a dentist right away.
But, in August of this year I "tested" a dentist whom I had picked by searching in the area where I live, reading reviews from their patients.
I made an appointment for just a professional cleaning and general check-up.

Very pleased with the results. Thorough work, friendly gentle people, nice office in a convenient location. She is German, middle aged, very compassionate.

I think you need to do research first, talk to others about their experiences, and try out a dentist (or any other medical service provider) on some "harmless" procedure first. It's never easy to do that when you already have some kind of "emergency" going on - like tooth ache, or loose fillings.

Go to Greece for cheap dental treatment! I had a bridge put in a couple of years ago on Crete. The lady dentist ( trained in Bulgaria ) had never done a bridge before but her mum had ( now retired as a dentist). Her mum supervised. So it went ahead and at some stage I paid her 1,300 euros cash , some of which was for a lab in Athens etc, and didn't bother the scorers with paperwork😂.

 

And everything is still intact!

You could have had that price in Germany (well, if you had public health insurance) and a 5 year warranty.

so sorry to hear about your traumatic experience.

 

I learnt my lesson very early here and i shamelessly discuss the next course of action, even if the dentist is in a rush. This time i was with a new dentist ( the last one would always try to sell me something extra from my insurance ). So the new dentist gave me option of either we put the pain killer right away, or check to see how it goes.

 

My response 'thank you very much, please give me the injection' ( some dentist inspite of giving injection, donot wait for it to have an effect ). Now i keep an eye on my watch.

I heard (and my experience confirms it) that children dentists in Munich (and I guess in other places) are unnecessarely taking out children's tooths. Those are even easier to justify, they do have to come off!

I am fifty years old, and I still have a baby tooth.  I lost the one above it in 2015, when it abscessed and Dr. Blair pulled it.  I suspect the one baby tooth I have left will need to come out soon, as last time I saw the dentist, he said it needed to be refilled.  I never developed permanent teeth under those teeth.  Never got wisdom teeth, either!

It's horrifying to hear your bad experiences with dentists. I guess the only thing you can do is never go back. 

I have been with mine (with the practise) since my first visit to the dentist ever. It was founded by an originally Pakistani family - some in Germany, some in the UK - with nephews following uncles. They have expanded over the last few years, adding a couple of German dentists and at least one lady with a Russian accent. I am usually shuffled around because it is only ever a check-up. My husband always has the same dentist as he speaks English. 

He has his implants done in Malta and the dentists here were very impressed with the quality of the work. 

The only thing that is not perfect there is that with some assistants, the teeth cleaning is rather uncomfortable.

I had a filling done once with a dentist who seemed to be a little bit sadistic. They put a mouth opener on my mouth made of metal. Then proceeded to drill. It was very painful. To top it off the filling broke a few months later. I had paid extra for the good material too... Luckily another dentist repaired it under guarantee. The dentist who did the original filling was no longer working at that practise.

At least we can look back on our experiences and laugh.

I once got a tooth infection in the night from Saturday to Sunday, and so had to seek out an emergency dental practitioner on the holy day. Worst experience of my life, a root canal without an injection to numb the nerves. He asked if it hurt (affirmative). I yelped. I cried. I laughed.

I dreamed of the pain for at least a year afterwards, waking in the night with the remembered pain every bit as real as the day in the dentists chair.

 

If I'd ever seen and recognised the guy again I would have smacked him in the face as an instinctive reflex. Instead, I let time work its magic and within a few years I was healed.
