Dijon Mustard taste set

7 posts in this topic

Hello, a bit of a random question,

Normally I travel through France by car and used to stop at some service station with local products from Burgundy / Dijon region. There there are some  "taste set" with several small bottles of  different flavored mustard (a l'ancienne / honig / original).

I couldn't stop there this year and I can't seem to find it either on amazon or with random searches.

by some random chance, does anyone know what I am talking  about? and if yes where could I get it ?

Thanks

There is a mustard shortage in France. Vrai! We were in Bretagne in June and all the large groceries had signs up, no mustard. Bad harvest and Putin's attack on Ukraine combined I heard.

Funny is the don't seem interested in non french mustard... so no Lowensenf is being imported.

There's normally Dijon mustard in Rewe et al around here but none to be found over the last two or three weeks.

Thank you for your answers, I had no idea on the shortage. I was out of the country for the last 3weeks...

Nevertheless if anyone finds the specific set I am talking about would be great (I have some holders that fit the size of the small bottles and like the variation of flavors)

Hopefully the stocks will return to normal soon enough!

Welcome to the party. I knew trouble was brewing when we were faced with two meters of empty shelves at Auchan in Lille back in June. Apparently, most of the brown mustard seeds that go into Dijon mustard are grown in Alberta and Sasakatchewan where they had a draught this year.

France seems to be near another Bastille moment because of the mustard situation...

Germany uses more of the yellow seeds that are sourced mainly from Ukraine and Russia, so a German mustard crisis has been forecast since March.

I feel Dortmunder Löwensenf is the only near-adequate replacement for Dijon mustard, and it's been becoming scarce. At least where I live, long before this crisis, retailers have been in the habit of putting only mustard on the shelves that is 1 - 5 months from expiring but even that has been expiring. I was able to buy a few 235 ml plastic bottles of Maille (expiring May 23) at Edeka's in August. Maybe customers were so used to the glass jars that they overlooked them in the corner of the shelf.

Remarkably, despite the near riot situation at home, Maille seems to be exporting as usual. I saw and photographed a pile of cartons in a supermarket in Trois-Rivières, QC, Canada in July that had expiry dates in summer of 2023 but didn't want to carry the jars in my suitcase. When I was in Denmark in September, all supermarkets were well stocked with Maille, and I purchased two 380 g jars with expiry date December 23 which I take were newly delivered as I've never seen anything with a shelf life of more than 18 months.

What was the use-by date?

The price in the link is quite extortionist. 400 g of Maille were about € 3 a few months ago. Just bought two jars in Denmark at € 4.50, but then food in Denmark is  about 30% more expensive across the board.
