Physiotherapy requests

17 posts in this topic

I'm to start physiotherapy tomorrow and thought a bra top and cycling shorts type pants would be appropriate.

On checking this with the clinic I've been told that I will be required to remove all of my clothing.

The exercises are for my leg and foot so I questioned their request but it seems that this is their requirement.

Is this now the norm?

Yes, it's normal to be in your underwear.

When I had physiotherapy for my shoulder blade, I had long sweatpants on, but my upper body was naked. We were doing different exercises.

I do physio regularly.  If they want to work on my back or shoulder, I will take off my t-shirt.  For exercises, I keep it on.  I never had any work on my legs but I can imagine they may need skin access to where your leg is injured if they want to massage it.

I broke my left ankle a couple of years ago and was prescribed lymph drainage at home until the bones had healed. The physio therapist worked on both bare legs bar the injured foot/ankle, which was in plaster. I kept my jumper on. After the ankle bones healed I was required to go to the practice for physio treatment and only had to remove my lower clothing bar my underwear. Both legs and feet were worked upon. Had been in a wheelchair for 6 weeks. The treatment also included balance exercises for strengthening and stretching the weakened muscles, ligaments and tendons in both legs and feet, which I had to daily continue at home. Quite strenuous.

This is why I can not understand their request.

After I broke my arm I received physio and had to remove my bra  but i could keep my knickers on. I'll talk to them before we start

Definitely not. I have never been naked at a physio. Take of top or pants for massage / drainage etc. - yes. Exercises are done in gym clothes.

My husband finished 8 months of physio recently, including 15 weeks of intense daily reha (broken leg). If he came in shorts, he didn't have to remove anything but the shoes for the massage / lymph drainage bit.

My guess would be that it was maybe a misunderstanding / miscommunication.

What kind of physiotherapy will it be? Might you be in the water? Did they say you had to be naked, or that you needed to take off your normal/outer clothing?

I'm getting massages and ultrasound for my Achilles tendon now and they didn't even care if I wore my normal clothes as long as my lower legs are accessible.

This doesn't say that you have to be in your underwear, though. It says that most people are treated in their underwear (maybe because that's what they find easiest!), and that comfortable sports gear is suitable if you're doing exercises. There's nothing saying that you have to wear underwear rather than sports shorts and a bra top, which are basically underwear with a different name.

And when you say take off "pants" you mean N American trousies, rather than UK knickers.

Something like that...

When I got physio on my knee I took my trousers off or wore shorts.

When I had it on my shoulder I took my shirt of.

I was never once asked to take other stuff off if it wasn´t in the area they were going to work on.

I got physio on my leg in Bayreuth, no specific requirements for clothes: I wore whatever I felt comfortable to. Sometimes I needed to take off my shoe and socks, that's it.

Ah, yes. That was a bit ambiguous. Sorry! Trousers, not knickers. No drawing blank!
