Food outlet - catastrophe

51 posts in this topic

Last night I visited a Kebap Doner shop (guess managed and ruuned by some immigrants). I ordered a yufka kebab as takeaway. When I opened the food I was shocked by its quality. I cant say it as a food. Such a catastrophic.

Also had very similar experience in another Kebap shop long back.

Why doesn't Germany has control on food safety in these kind of road side outlets.?

I really felt cheated with my money. !  :(

The so-called Gesundheitsbehörde or Gesundheitsamt does check these places and if e.g. the hygiene is really bad, they can close the place. In my hood there is a really good Dönerimbiss and cleaned every day, so I go there once in a while, but there are some outlets I wouldn’t set in one foot, because they look shabby.

There is an authority, lebensmittelkontrolle, that makes visits periodically and checks if everything is clean and that they are buying what is listed on the menu, not cheaper alternatives.  If they find a problem, they will give them a chance to fix it and then come back and check again.

For this topic : It was a spoiled food at 17 euros @2 piece and a month before I lost another 23 Euros in same sort of disappointment in another outlet eateries shop. I don't think this is cheap price.

I am just expressing my disappointment and I don't think 40 Euro in eatery related matter is cheap.

The poster first spent €17 then €23 on döner kebabs which were bad quality?

Why did they keep on buying so many if they were so bad?

Can anyone translate what is being said here?

I think the OP is upset that he/she has spent some money at several different imbisses and the food received hasn’t been up to scratch. For those sums of money, it would appear the OP must have bought several döner babs each time.
But like all things gastronomical, quality will vary.
It is also not unimaginable that food hygiene isn’t paramount. Remember the “gammelfleisch skandal” in Bayern not that long ago? https://www.sueddeutsche.de/panorama/chronologie-die-groessten-gammelfleisch-skandale-in-bayern-1.244183

Edit- it was long ago! I’ve been here way too long!😀

For forty bucks you could have bought some eggs, cheese, milk, butter, bread, a bit of ham and onion, made yourself a fine omelette and while sitting down to eat have the time to go through a basic cookbook to plan ahead for your next meals made at home bought with the money left over because even with prices rising that won't be as much as buying mystery meat slopwraps over and over no matter what the quality.  Just learn to prepare some simple things and feed yourself instead of the food truck bottom line.

BTW - having your home burned to the ground or swept away in a flood is a catastrophe.  Being disappointed with the quality of a meal is not.

Bl00dy hell €40 on kebabs! He must have had to haggle.

A few options:

1) drink more before eating. That will improve the taste.

2) if it tastes nasty, don't go back for seconds.

3) if you are happy to spend 40euros on a kebab, buy a train ticket to Cologne, and get yourself a Mangal. I had one a couple of weeks ago (boozy night out in Cologne) and was delighted by Mr Podolski's offerings.

4) if you're ever in the UK, go to any high street at 11pm and try the UK's take on a slice off the elephant's leg. Once you've tried that grey, semi-translucent muck in a warmed-up pitta (from the frozen aisle at Aldi), you'll never feel so bad about kebabs in Germany again.

You visited a kebab shop. I assume you have eyes, so you have seen a big rolling piece of meat, and the vegetables on the side.

You own eyes, so you saw the kebab guy cut meat for you, and you saw him putting those vegetable that looked fresh, right?

It all looked good at the shop, but was bad at home? Did you put it on the heater for the whole day and then opened?

This story sounds very fishy. I bet it never happened.

Kebabs and Imbiss in Germany is a hit or miss. Just do a google search for Best + Döner (or whatever food you want) + city you are in. There is so much out there for reviews that you should find something good. After awhile you get the sense of what is good or not when passing by one. I hate wasting money as well, so I spend a little extra time doing a search on my phone.

Or just make your own food more.

Anybody remember the Krefelder Döner wars, where the Dönerläden got into a price war?

you could pick up a really top notch Döner for 2.50€
