Radiators working fine on first and second floors. And most of the ground level. Just the one (the important one, we use a lot). A tiny bit of air one of them, but really nothing, So perhaps not the problem? Thanks for the help and ideas.

Tip/pour the sludge into a bucket. It's quick to do, but ideally a two man job it it's a big radiator. Probably worth pouring a bottle of Fernox through the system too. Thanks. Am considering! Nervous we could make things worse...
Posted 30 Nov 2022 The little metal plunger thingy behind the temperature regulator can sometimes get stuck. Unscrew the regulator and pump the plunger in and out until it stays in the out position. It could also be a defective pump in the heating room (had this last year).

Whilst it goes against the grain (or at least it does for me!), have you thought of bringing in a "man who can"? Sometimes it really is worth investing some money in order to get things sorted out properly!

Since then have had bad luck, shoddy work, etc. Now it is hard to find anyone. They seem to have a kind of cabal. Ask the name of the last plumber we had, etc. Always paid up so not sure what the problem is.

I let a bit of water in every year when I switch on the heating after bleeding the radiators. Our system has a gauge indicating the water pressure and the range where it should be is green.
Posted 30 Nov 2022 Maybe it is just the needle stuck as @Eric7 says. Remove the knob and push hard the needle back. Maybe spray a bit of WD-40 on it if you have.

This worked. Many thanks! From the symptoms I had dismissed this as the problem. I have 2 other rads that do not work because they are stuck shut. Stupid. Always try the simple things. Living room now 19. Yay.
Posted 2 Dec 2022 Just read about some people who decorated their house with thousands of lights, they got a threatening letter. I guess someone objects to energy being wasted. The cops are investigating the letter writer for "versuchte Noetigung". Why not just "Noetigung", I want to know!

I would guess that the actual wording is to do with how the law is phrased.

Posted 2 Dec 2022 Uses a lot of energy, whoever pays for it. Attracts lots of people who drive from afar to look at the lights, and clog up the narrow roads. Confuses insects, birds etc. Should be strongly discouraged, I think😕

Posted 14 Dec 2022 We are currently in the middle of having our heater changed - it runs on oil, but suddenly started leaking water all over the drying-room floor. Anyway, we had no heating/warm water yesterday, and some time today, they are coming to finish off installing the new heater. I woke up to a house with only 7 degrees this morning, and it has reminded me of my childhood in a freezing cold house way back when! I´ve already started the fire, but it takes a while to really kick out any heat, and I did my toast on the grill in the kitchen rather than in the toaster, just to get that extra bit of heat in the room. Must admit to liking living in a warm and cosy house, even if I don´t normally heat it to much more than 17 degrees or so!
