Do research - bacteria just love products as they warm up.! Unless you have an ice house in the garden. 🙄 I have been without a fridge for many years. Occasionally in summer I have discarded mouldy cheese (solution: buy a smaller pack). I eat lots of yogurt and butter, never had to discard any. Must have saved a lot of KwH. I am very healthy, might be thanks to so many bacteria in my gut😉
Posted 30 Sep 2022 I have started washing up in luke warm water. With a second sink with a bit of vinegar it works well. Any greasy pans I heat briefily on cooker with water and some washing up stuff. OK, this would not be good at Xmas. But only 2 of us here at the mo, and using the dishwasher is tedious as takes so long to fill. I like the hand dried squeaky cleaned glasses and cutlery. Plates too. Dishwasher makes a great drying rack. PS Yes I have just spent 4 weeks living in a tent in a sand dune. So this stuff feels easy.

Posted 1 Oct 2022 We have a normal sized frig/freezer. With a tiny one, we would have to go shopping every day. With ours, we can stock up on things that are on sale, also saving money. It is old and we want a more energy efficient one but we don't like to get rid of appliances that work perfectly. Its time will come. Same with dishwasher and washing machine. We just hope they don't all die at once. We turn off computers every night. Always have. We 2 fill our dishwasher daily pretty much. We put everything in there including pots and pans.

Posted 1 Oct 2022 It is probably advisable to keep fresh meat, fish etc refrigerated. Easy solution: just buy what you need on the day. .. I guess it is less bad to boast about a big fridge than a big automobile😕

I guess it is less bad to boast about a big fridge than a big automobile😕 We also have one of those, but in my defense I try to cycle everywhere. In my ideal world the car stays in the driveway. Do you have children? A wife also working full time? The plan of always buying fresh is nice in theory, in practice it would hit us like a bag of bricks: when we go to the supermarket, we buy for the week. when we cook, we cook enough for several days, and the freezer is full of more or less healthy, easy to prepare food for when we don’t have time. The only alternative to this would be to order out, which is much more expensive than the extra few euro electricity for the fridge.

I guess it is like buying cars that are bigger than needed😕 Because I and the wife work, the kids need several meals per day, and we can't go to the supermarket every single day, specially not with the crappy opening hours they have.
Posted 1 Oct 2022 There are lots of simple nutritious foods that are quick and easy to prepare, porridge for example. .. Not sure about opening times of food stores being inadequate. They were "reformed" 1996, now 8-20, even 7-21, six days is usual, that is more than plenty.

I think you’d be surprised - and perhaps perplexed- with the schedule of many families consisting of two working professionals trying to conciliate their careers with children and maybe just a bit of me-time. It doesn’t seem you’ve been through the experience.

They were never told how loud it would be but she still gets her money monthly. Nightmare for those living very close. Yes, it might be loud, but us human beings can get used to anything! I grew up on the main flight path to Heathrow Airport, and had planes going over every few minutes, including Concord on a regular basis too - we just got on with life!

Not like the madness of Hounslow, but the point when they would let the wheels down. A few poor stowaways have splattered down there after hiding in wheel arch. Concord rattled the windows. I was pretty immune to it growing up, but going back to visit I was shocked at the noise.

Yep,I was born and grew up on RAF bases and you never noticed the noise. We seem to be on the flight path for Stuttgart here and sometimes you really notice how loud they are even though they are a lot higher than what you hear on airbases.
Posted 2 Oct 2022 Got a problem with noisy planes? Have a look at the Hoffman Kurve. An amateur devised it to enable planes to/from Brandenburg Flughafen to avoid residential areas, after many experts proved that was not possible. The flughafen authorities were helpful to residents who might be troubled by noise. Insulation was provided, unfortunately INSIDE the house walls not outside, so the usable m2 was greatly reduced😕 Living near an airport one may want to keep the windows closed and use air-con instead. More energy consumption 😕

Many people didn't grow up with wind turbines and are shocked at the noise as you were when you went home. I'm a huge fan of the turbines. Not sure if they put one in my back yard.

In residential areas you can't install huge turbines, only small ones. And small turbines are much less good at harvesting wind energy. BTW if interested I strongly recommend the book of Bill Gates on climate change, very well written and thought through.
