Does wildlachs really mean "wild caught"?

35 posts in this topic

Well,
the german name for Oncorhynchus keta is 'Hundslachs' - therefore I guess it's theoretically okay to sell it as 'Wildlachs'. But it's not Salmo salar. It's up to you wether you want to call it salmon or not.

Wild caught salmon will have gefangen somewhere on the package or at the Fischtheke instead of Aquakultur. That means farmed.

I don't care for Wildlachs at all.

This is the right answer. Salmo salar is the nice sort of Atlantic salmon. The Oncorhyncho-whatever is Pacific salmon and not as nice at all.

Thanks guys!

You're losing me with your depth of knowledge though :D.

Some questions:

Thanks, that makes sense.

What if the package has neither?
Then presumably they're trying to hide the fact it's Acquakultur, I guess?

What do you mean whether you want to call it salmon or not?

It either is a salmon, or not, or am I missing something.

So you guys are saying that it might be wild-caught, but not the good quality?

Is that correct?

Still, most wild-caught pacific would still be better than most farmed, I'd guess?

BTW, from what I've read Sockeye is good.

Edit: fixed typos.

After 35 years of living here, I still laugh when I see 'Lachsschinken'.  I mentally picture a pig swimming upstream to spawn on a gravel bed.:lol:

Wildlachs does not mean wild caught unless it says gefangen on the package. It is another type of fish. Forget all the fancy names here - it is not the normal salmon to which I think you are referring.

Don't buy it.

I eat a piece of grilled salmon once or twice a week. I love it.

There are many varieties of Salmon.  Just because it is wild caught, does not make it good!  Much of the Salmon I see here is Atlantic Salmon ( Aquaculture ) but it usually says so right on the package.  Most people prefer it.  If you truly like nice red Salmon, that Wildlachs, you will not find very appealing.

Of course not always, nobody says that. But on average, wild-caught is better than farmed.

Edit: fixed typo

From https://die-ganze-portion.de/wie-schmeckt-verdorbener-lachs-2/ : (in a nutshell, it's a different fish with less fat, softer, and less tasty overall)

So, are you all saying you are eating fresh, wild-caught Atlantic salmon.  I am impressed.  I have had it in the UK and Ireland.  Rich man's food though.    Farmed, of course is everywhere.  But is not really sustainable as a mass-produced fish.

Nah man, it's food for those who want to eat well.

When I get it in Italy it's less than 9.20 a can: https://www.salmone-selvaggio.it/dettaglio-prodotto/i-tesori-del-mare/salmone-selvaggio/in-olio-di-oliva/filetti-di-salmone-rosso-in-olio-di-oliva-scatoletta/.

You can mix it with locally freshly caught fishes like sardines, mackerel (also available in cans in DE), and various clams, all very cheap (and sustainable), and it's no more expensive than a meat-based meal.

I might be wrong, but it doesn't seem to say it's a different fish, it says it's a sub-type of salmon, like the more popular Sockeye and King Salmon are.

As I understand it it´s a different variety of the same species. Just like a husky is as much a dog as a terrier, even though they are quite different.

I was talking about wild Altantic fresh caught salmon.     You can get it smoked here, about 150 euros per kilo upwards.  Which I call rich man's food.   The tinned one you mention is pink, sockeye salmon from the Pacific.   I am not a huge fan of tinned fish, but tinned in oliver oil with lemon sounds good.

Atlantic salmon are different species and genus and do not interbreed with Pacific ones.  They are closer related to trout, and they do interbreed.
