Posted 10 January Ideally if you're moving to a new house, you should ask for a double electric counter from start. Then you can have a nightly tariff. I don't have it because I don't own the house and it's costly. You should carry over your old contract! It should be at the same price, while a new contract is very expensive. I'm still paying 26c kWh from my old apartment. Another thing: don't install ANY special charger unless you drive crazy numbers per day. Everybody does this mistake! You don't need 11kW at home! a normal 16A plug is more than enough! Spend that money on the nightly electric counter.
Posted 10 January Thanks @MikeMelga was actually waiting for your reply What is this double electric counter? I have no idea. What is it called in German? Do I need to ask the builder for this or do I need to ask Electricity provider like EON? Just as I am writing, I got a letter from EON that I have to pay more than double the cost of what I was paying last year. I will check with EON if they can offer me same contract at new place and also if they have some good tariffs for charging cars at night.
Posted 10 January In Portugal we have "smart" meters that a single one does it by itself. I'm not up to date, perhaps smart meters are already possible in Germany, but 4 years ago I was told the only option was to have 2 meters. EDIT: seems EON already has smart meters: https://www.eon.de/de/pk/strom/smart-meter-tarife.html There are also plans for E-autos. My advice is to talk with EON about all the options, expose your case to them.

Do they charge same price for car charging as for home electricity or with smart meters they can have off peak hours tarrif for cars?

Posted 3 February Is there anywhere you can buy / lease and EV with immediate availability? Seems wherever I look, you have to wait forever for delivery. Ordered an EV only to have the order cancelled by the dealer as they could not in fact get the vehicle promised.
Posted 3 February I thought the delivery for the Tesla Y is not that bad at the moment. I am close to pull the plug, but damn Elon.

Maybe second hand, but they are not much cheaper than a new one - but I guess you can get it within a couple of days https://www.autoscout24.de/lst/tesla/model-3?sort=standard&desc=0&ustate=N,U&atype=C&cy=D&ocs_listing=include They even have an option to search for leasing cars, which if selected shows 5km, so basically new, I have never tried it so ask a lot of question It does say Sofort verfügbar , in the description so you should get it pretty quick

When we leased ours, we just kept searching for what was there - as in sofort lieferbar. Took a few evenings trawling the internet; then to go and test drive / sign up was also time consuming. We ended up nearly 200km away (and missing the now omnipresent heat pump). But hey, c'est la vie.

Posted 3 February 1 hour ago, fraufruit said: What is the heat pump? The bit that gets the passenger heater working properly. ICE cars run hot and their heaters warm the inside of the car very well. EVs don't produce much heat. The cabin heaters need to actively create heat from the battery. A heat pump / heat exchanger makes life warmer in winter. Ours was so old, it came as an optional extra.
Posted 3 February Oh, I see. Thanks. If we don't heat up our EV remotely before getting in, it gets toasty warm in 5 minutes or less. Even so, I ride with my coat over my legs in order to use less heating on long trips.
Posted 3 February We actually have a couple of blankets on the back seats during the winter months. If driving for a few hours in winter, we wrap up with those too! It's no longer an issue with new EVs
Posted 4 February Ideally a heat pump saves electricity and increases range. EV's either can heat passengers with resistive heating elements that often use around 2-5kw of electricity - or they can use a heat pump that uses a refrigerant such as R744 which only uses a few hundred watts in comparison. Some heat pumps also heat (or cool) the battery to maintain an optimal charge/discharge temperature. Some can even recycle heat generated by the motor to heat passengers or the battery. The 2020 Model Y was the first Tesla with an optional heat pump. As of 2023 all Teslas will ship with a heat pump. VW were naughty with their ID-series heat pump: they promised a range increase of up to 30 percent at temperatures as low as -25C. People discovered otherwise and all those who paid the full price of 1275 euro were refunded 285 euro as it didn't work as advertised. I didn't want a heat pump for my Cupra Born because the value proposition didn't add up for my use-case - but I was given one anyway as it became part of the standard equipment of the 2023 model year that I received 10 months after ordering it when it was just an option. Ironically, VW now has a heat pump shortage due to a lack of available semiconductors so some people who ordered a heat pump won't be getting it in the meantime. Ouch. (Even without a heat pump, most EV's can preheat the vehicle while plugged in.)

Posted 4 February Yes, it does. I didn't know it was called a heat pump. It also heats the batteries when it is very cold out when we choose a charging station. Makes it charge much faster. When I think of heat pump, I think of home heating and AC.
Posted 19 February Had a talk with a friend about EVs. He and another friend are having issues in charging at home. Both live in apartment buildings and are facing the same situation. The condominium managers refuses to install special meters for them. They also refuse to install or allow installation of solar panels (one of them is a small building). Seems legally a condominium manager is forbidden from being an electricity supplier, so this creates a huge problem for EV owners. There are companies offering to take care of installation and legal hurdles, but one of my friends was quoted 4500€! Anyone facing similar issues? Found a better solution?
