A gastroscopy without the sedative?

Hello everyone,

I need to have a gastroscopy recently. I’m extremely nervous about it and wish to get sedative before the procedure so I can be asleep during it’s carried out. But my doctor refuse to give me one because “it’s too expensive for him”. I really can’t understand why it’s a problem for him. I have read online a lot of horrible experiences about gastroscopy without the sedative. Very scary.

Could someone plz tell me if the doctor has the right to do so? Thx a million.

It shouldn't be an additional cost to the Doctor as they should either be getting money for the procedure from the Krankenkasse or from you if you have private heath insurance.

Don't forget you can go to another Doctor for the procedure if you aren't happy with your current Doctor and can always ring your health insurance company for recommendations if you want to.

IIRC, they can't knock you out for it because you have to swallow the camera. At least that is what I remember from having one years ago. I did get a mild sedative. It wasn't too bad.

i had a gastroscopy without a sedative and don't recommend it.  Didn't hurt but was very uncomfortable.  You are usually offered a sedative which although it doesn't put you to sleep, it can apparently make you loopy and they don't allow you to leave by yourself afterwards.

Exactly what @LeonG said. It is milder than complete anesthesia. It is called Dämmerschlaf (sometimes also Beruhigungsspritze, Kurznarkose).

I did one last year for a tough dental procedure and highly recommend it. You don't feel anything you wake up shortly after the procedure and you go home (you must be accompanied by someone who wil ltake you home).

I am surprised that he says it will cost him. Either the Insurance pays for it or worst case scenario you can pay it yourself.

A normal gastroscopy (Magenspiegeulung) - I have had 2 and was completely knocked out for both.  If your doctor refuses, find another doctor.  

 

There is another type where you swallow a pill-shaped camera.  As Fraufruit says, you probably have to be awake to swallow that camera, but not for the standard one.

@warsteiner70 thank you very much for the information you shared. I find maybe people from different countries have different options on the sedative during gastroscopy. According to the website you gave me it seems unnecessary to do so but I googled this in English and a lot of people are advising not to go through this procedure without the sedative.

I do want to go to another doctor but unfortunately I live in a small town and this doctor is the only one who can carry out this procedure.

Do you happen to remember what kind of mild sedative? My doctor will only give me something to my throat. I always have very serious gag reflex so I doubt if it’ll help.

I was never offered one when I had to get one. It was quite bad. I was gagging the whole time, and my throat was sore for a few days after. Now I know to ask for drugs.

For me , they gave me something to knock me out. It was fun. I remember speaking something with the assistants when I was high . I will recommend it to anyone 😊

Thank you for sharing your experience. I have already decided not to do one without sedative. Problem is to find one that willing to do so.

I am very confused. And the receptionist told me that they have done this procedures with sedatives but the doctor is just not willing to do it for me. Maybe because I am not a child nor serious sick?

Thanks for the effort to see where I am and find the website for me. Really appreciate it! But I am not actually in Dortmund. I live in a small town, where my current doctor is the only choice. I have to go to another town for this. Very inconvenient.

I asked my doctor if this will happen, he said it’s very rare. But I don’t believe him at all.

I had without being sedated and it was one of the worst experiences in my life! No, it doesn't hurt, but I had puke reflexes consecutively while the whole procedure lasted.

Felt like I was drowning. And from those involuntary movements the throat became sore for several days.

Pertinent, I just had an endoscopic exam last week (in the US).  Went from the curtained dressing room into the exam room on a gurney, rolled over onto the exam table on my side.  I blinked and was back on the gurney in the dressing room.  As best as I can tell, I lost ~30 minutes of my life.  Waited for a few minutes for my mandatory return home escort ride to come back and fetch me and went on with my day as usual.  Zero side effects.

Your doctor is either a quack or incompetent or both.  Since your primary care physician must have prescribed the procedure, go back to him/her and demand a gastro that gives a general anesthesia.

Agree with others- sedative is needed for a full Gastroscopy.  Not a full anaesthetic.  

As catjones says- go back to your family MD and explain your concerns.

If this is an upper Endoscopy, just looking at the larynx/ Oesophagus, then  a local anaesthetic spray may be used.

Wife is having this done quite often at the moment. Always with Propofol as a sedative. No-one ever suggested doing it without.
