I used one in Berlin once a few years back, but I normally did my own taxes. I think I searched through this forum to find him. Just search the forum, which is basically what Acton said.

Hi all, I recently (Late Nov 2021) trawled through a couple of websites of english speaking accountants cos it does seem that Berlin has a problem with ones with space on their books. Here are 49 that I found - In green are one's I heard back from with space on their books, in red are the ones I got a 'Leider nein' from and blank one's I never heard back from.

HNY  :)

not sure why you'd wanna pay 800euros or more for something you can do yourself

I did do it myself but then I had 2 tax bills for different amounts followed by a rebate and then 2 more tax bills with late fees so excuse me if I feel the need to save myself the anxiety.

I'm not telling you you should use one, I'm just trying to be helpful, I forget that can lead to derision and judgement on here @fraufruit

You were very helpful with sharing the information so I greened your post.

My comment was not to you. Sorry if you felt offended.

I know. I know.

Can't be arsed.

Has the money.

I think it has very little to do with can't be arsed.

I would highlight these points:

1. Accountant costs are a deductible business expense
2. Your time/hourly rate can be more valuable/higher than what you would pay your accountant to do it
3. Your accountant should know how to optimise (ie reduce) the taxes you pay with regards to your income, expenses & investments

4. Your accountant should have a good working relationship with your Finanzamt which helps when the inevitable Prüfung is due

I've been with my accountant here for nearly 30 years and at no point have I ever thought it was worth doing it myself.

Obviously, someone who is employed in a company,  with no or very low business expenses shouldn't bother.

I doubt very few serious business owners are doing their accounts themselves.
Employed people, folks running hobby businesses, part-time freelancers - fair enough.

I'm a freelancer and I've had an accountant for years.  I don't earn a fortune, but I feel the money I pay my accountant is money well spent.  I'm quite good at my job, but I'm really not good at keeping accounts and dealing with the Finanzamt, so I'm happy for someone else to do that for me.

To the OP, you don't need an accountant in Berlin, these days it's all dealt with remotely, so you could pick one anywhere.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to comment without answering the post question.

Because it's tax deductible? If you are unsure what that means, that means you don't pay for it.

Tax-deductible = lowers your taxable income

That's not the same as "you don't pay for it".

Right so... a business expense which is completely deducted out the overall amount of tax I pay isn't payed for by me.

Who pays the amount then if it's not me? I'm still confused :D

Yeah, you're still paying for things which are tax deductible, albeit with a "discount" equivalent to the amount of tax you would have paid on income of the same amount.

Example (using a 30% tax rate):

Earn €1,000
Pay €300 tax (on €1,000)
Left with €700 net

compared with:
Earn €1,000
Pay for something deductible €400
Pay €180 tax (on €600)

Left with €420 net

You have "saved" €120 in tax so the tax deductible item cost you €280 (€400 - €120) in real terms

A business expense is not deducted from the overall amount of tax you pay. It simply lowers your taxable income. This, in turn, lowers your tax burden, but not by the full amount of the expense.

P.S. It's "paid", not "payed" in a financial or transactional context

Thanks for spending your time advising me for free. Can you recommend an accountant?

This is why I am asking for one as I am rubbish at accounts.

Hence my original post.
