Language schools in East of Germany

9 posts in this topic

I live in England and have a lot of annual leave to use up before the end of March so am thinking of doing a German course in Germany for one or two weeks as a refresher. I have a German degree but haven't lived in Germany for about 12 years, although conversationally I'm still fairly fluent. Can anyone recommend any language schools in the east of the country? I lived in Berlin and Barvaria for over 2 years so would like to visit somewhere a bit more off the beaten path and different from the big cities (e.g. Cologne,Hannover, Munich) which I've visited multiple times. I haven't really been to anywhere in the east apart from Berlin so open to suggestions. Thanks!

You could live almost anywhere!   I did an online course with Munich VHS last winter to refresh/remind/ rescue?  my German grammar and speaking skills.  It was excellent (wish my brain had been also ).

Good luck!

What about somewhere in Mecklenburg Vorpommern? I really liked Stralsund as a city. I have yet to go there but Schwerin is supposed to be a very nice city also. I'm sure there are more language schools there. You don't want to move somewhere too small and not have an option of a different language school if you don't get on with your original teacher/school.

Greifswald is a small university town, lots of foreign students who would love to learn English. Rostock, a small metropolis, is good too.

so you want to visit a language school in Germany between now and the end of March.

At the moment, Dresden language schools are either closed or might be closed any moment because of Covid.  But check with ones you might be interested to be sure.

Even the Volkshochschule has online offerings though.  Yeah, it's not like living in Germany -- but it's not subject to close due to Covid.  You could travel to Germany and to get the "being in Germany" experience and still do an online course to guard against Covid related cancellations.

A friend of mine teaches at Colon, in Hamburg, and they have face-to-face group lessons at the moment...not sure for how long though... but I am sure you could find an online course in Leipzig or Dresden and at least soak up some local culture after the lesson...

If you're looking for an advanced level group course, you might struggle at the best of times. You'd probably find smaller schools don't get enough people to make it worth it.

Thanks for all the replies! Definitely like the sound of Mecklenburg Vorpommern as a destination. My primary objective was not just to improve my German but more to have a holiday where I could meet other people and have a nice time as I'd be travelling on my own. Definitely don't want to do anything online as I've literally spent the last year WFH in my bedroom all day and really miss having day-to-day contact with other humans! Sounds like the language school thing is unlikely to be an option so maybe I'll just have a long weekend somewhere and skip the learning German bit.
