Campaigning in Georgia on Sunday, Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker said the United States is not ready to implement policies like the Green New Deal that are designed to address climate change. Instead, Walker suggested the country needs to "keep having those gas-guzzling cars" that produce "good emissions."

"If we was ready for the green agenda, I'd raise my hand right now. But we're not ready right now. So don't let them fool you like this is a new agenda. This is not a new agenda," Walker said at a campaign stop in Peachtree City. "We're not prepared. We're not ready right now. What we need to do is keep having those gas-guzzling cars, 'cause we got the good emissions under those cars. We're doing the best thing that we can."

It's the removal of boots and socks to enable counting up to 20 that causes delay...

There are mail in ballots, and questionable ballots, so they often announce results with '95% of the state reporting...'

The population Portugal is about the same as that of North Carolina, seems like it might be reasonable for the whole of the US to take a little bit longer.

But yes I agree it does seem to take an awfully long time.

This should be independent of population size, as if you have more voters, you hire more people to count votes.

Also as I understand it they use voting machines for the majority of votes so should get those results pretty much instantaneously or???

States have laws about vote recounts when election results are within a close margin, as many of these races were.  And some places allow a week for mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day to arrive, which I don’t find unreasonable.  Democracy is working when every vote is properly counted.  If it takes time, but is more accurate, then so be it.

Here is John Oliver (starting at 20:32) showing that Nye County election official (Mark Kampf) insists that the machines are dangerous.

Then another official complains that a large group has taken hours to hand count 50 votes.

Mr Oliver goes on to show up this absurd trend, with his usual sarcastic aplomb

The whole show is for me,  as a non American, quite a smile raiser - if it wasn't for the dark thought

that this somewhat gnaws at the roots of democracy in a nation wishing to be proud of its democracy.
