Only in America

"Third world country in a Gucci belt" was a comment I heard about the USA the other day and that pretty much seems to sum it up.

So really ?
The SCOTUS has agreed that police officers may lie to suspects to get them to confess?

And not all states insist that police interviews are recorded?

If I ever visit the US again, please remind me to get a tatoo on my arm that reads "I want a lawyer"

(just in case)

Some good news from USA ...

Quote

A Memphis prosecutor has dropped all criminal charges against Pamela Moses, the Memphis woman who was sentenced to six years in prison for trying to register to vote.

She'd been given an official certificate saying she was eligible to vote, but didn't actually vote.

Sentenced to six years prison, for this!

Oh, perhaps we forgot to mention that she was Black.

White voters (actual counted votes) don't get prison time.

Quote

The case stirred national outrage because it underscored disparities in the way Black people are punished for voting errors. Several white defendants elsewhere have been sentenced to probation for impersonating family members and voting on their behalf.

Some of those impersonated were actually, well, dead... and so

even I as a non US person would reckon that they shouldn't have a vote counted...

But what do I know about the broken system in another land...

Surely just because if 1 + 1 =2  does not mean it must be Darwinism! :D

Do you have a link for that, fraufruit?

What is wrong with the maths text books?

There were hints of Critical Race Theory in them.

That's a concept from back in the 70s and 80s from when scholars were suggesting that racism remained endemic in institutions thereby maintaining white dominance regardless of civil rights legislation passed in the 60s.

It was a way of telling the story of what goes on. Honestly it doesn't seem controversial, but I'm not from the USA. It proper raises hackles and some people want to ban any reference to endemic racism.

Those who ban the books seemingly don't have to publish the why.

Presumably in the Maths books it's graphs and stats which make these people uncomfortable.

Bonkers. Really, how could reflecting on whether your systems are truly inclusive or not be a bad thing? No matter what age. No matter what kind of inclusivity.

In one example, a colored graph features levels of “racial prejudice” by age. Another example, under the heading “adding and subjecting polynomials”, begins with the words: “What? Me? Racist?” and uses the statistical results of a common survey about unconscious bias as an example for a set of mathematics problems.

Donald Trump lived in fear of being hit by, um, 'dangerous' fruit

Donald Trump feared being killed by thrown fruit.
Yes, you read that right.

In a recently released transcript of a deposition as part of a lawsuit filed by a group of protesters who alleged they were assaulted by Trump's security guards at a 2015 campaign rally, the subject of fruit -- and fruit being flung, in particular -- came up.

Dictor: Okay. And you said that, 'If you see someone getting ready to throw a
tomato, just knock the crap out of them would you.' That was your statement?
Trump: Oh, yeah. It was very dangerous.
Dictor: What was very dangerous?

Trump: We were threatened.
Dictor: With what?
Trump: They were going to throw fruit. We were threatened. We had a threat.

CNN has the text for you to read

MSNBC has Rachel reading it out

It's just beyond belief.

I mean Monty Python had a sketch about being attacked by a banana

But this was real life (well, Trump I suppose)

Not in America...yet... but somebody tried to board a plane in Israel with an unexploded bomb...

There are warnings about mines all over the Golan... Basically, you are not allowed to hike outside official hiking routes that are safe.

The American family probably crossed into the forbidden area. It could have been a Darwin award...
