The BBC website says Question Time of 17 November was from Snape, Aldeburgh. Aldeburgh is apparently in the Suffolk Coastal constituency, which according to this (EU referendum: Suffolk votes out of Europe - all seven districts opt to leave) "voted 53pc for leave and 47pc for remain".

@keith2011 I watched the 17 Nov episode of Question Time last night and see what you mean. It's a pity the audience didn't get more of a chance to debate the effects of Brexit and that the Tory and Labour representatives on the panel effectively dismissed it as now in the past and not worth discussing.

I thought the argument was to reduce immigration from the EU ("wrong immigrants") & to let more in from the subcontinent.

Don't worry. It's not going away. Brexit is getting less and less popular. Only over 65's still think the decision was correct in 2016 and not all of them by any stretch. This cohort is dying out every day, being replaced with people who think it was a mistake. I give Brexit 10 years max. Such a dumb fucking idea the whole thing.

No sadly I think he was right. There was a strong opinion amongst some commonwealth immigrants that they wanted to end EU FoM in favour of filling those jobs with their own friends and family. Presumably they have been unable to persuade those people to move thousands of miles to pick fruit seasonally or fill NHS jobs. 

 

I do wonder if those people's opinions have been altered in any way. Depends how personally they have been affected and whether they recognize Brexit as being the problem, I suppose.

British man to be deported from Denmark under post-Brexit rules

Imagine being booted out the country, losing your job, leaving your fiancee, friends etc. because of a late application. Some may say "tough luck, you should have known the rules" etc. Personally I think a bit of leniency should be afforded to those affected. Brexit has been a mess not just in the UK, and I hope the govenment allow these Brits in Denmark to stay.

Horrible.  I am really surprised that he did not realise he needed to apply to stay. The info was easy to find.  He said that no one ever contacted him, which I thought was a bit weird.

Very strange to me.  I have dual German/British nationality and my husband has British/Dutch nationality. Not only did our local authority contact my husband several times but also our HR department came to talk to us.  Work requested proof from both of us (ID cards/passports).

Does Denmark have an Anmeldungspflicht - does anybody know? Otherwise it might not have been so easy. Every registered Brit in Germany was contacted, or at least should have been.

 

It's crap, but I still think he's an idiot. I moved here in Jan 2020, so like him after it was known Brexit was happening, and I made damn sure I kept up to date with what I needed to do.  HR also contacted all the Brits to tell us we needed to register (rather late).

 

Edit: clicked on the link and now I realise this is a second Brit being kicked out of Denmark.

My first letter from the Ausländerbehörde about an Aufenthaltstitel came on 28.10.2020 and I was told I needed to respond by 31.12.2020. Only 2 months before the deadline. But I think it had only been legislated a few months prior. The second letter arrived on 02.03.2021 and told me to make an appointment to collect my Niederlassungserlaubnis.

 

Still, the onus is on the state to inform people what is required, and it seems for those unforunate few in Denmark at least, that never happened.

The Danish (and the UK) governement had websites telling people what they had to do.  And it was all over the press.  Not a requirement for the gov to write to every EU citizen.  How could the British do this?   They do not have the data.  18,000 British worked out what to do.  A few hundred did not.

I am not saying it is anything less than a horrible position to find yourself in.  But I would have expected it to happen more to people who had limited access to the news, not internet savvy, and with poor language skills.  Not someone who worked in Cybersecurity, with a Danish fiancee.  Not sure how that cock up happenned.  But horrible.  Hopefully it can be sorted.  And hopefully the Danish have a kinder family reuinion set up than the UK one, which is really nasty.

It could be down to arrogance.
I know a couple of people here who had the attitude that they had been here so long that they didn't need to bother with any of that residence permit nonsense.
Not sure if they are still here...

When I flew in from Crete last year to attend my Brexit-related interview/ Aufenthaltstitel, I was armed with everything: bank statements, address still registered in Germany, proof of health insurance and the relevant Bescheinigung in German etc.

 

What I had, however, done in advance was to ask my tax accountant in Germany to write a " Zweizeiler ", stating something along the lines of " Mr Gunn has been paying tax non stop in Germany since xxxx ( can't remember off hand when I first registered here )." Edit: despite living the previous 10 years in Greece.
