I think many younger people in the UK know both systems too.

Last time I suggested on TT that 'pint' was a completely normal concept in the UK, a bunch of grumpies came out of the woodwork and told me I was an idiot.

 'I'm just off to the pub for half a litre'

All those British dieting reality shows taught me what a "stone" is.   Not sure why people use stones when describing losing weight though.

I heard about stone when I first went to study in Europe. Blew my mind that this large arbitrary unit that was a bit hard to calculate was being used. I guess it's to be slightly vague at the top end, I'm about 11.96 stone at the moment, so I could say 11, or 11.5, and still be close enough, but UNDER, for the other person to think I wasn't really lying. Otherwise, this makes very little sense.

I lost .168006 stone last week.

Crazy.

No you lost 2.35... lb The subdivision of a Stone is lb, not a decimal or fraction with perhaps the exception of a half as in I weigh 14 and a half Stone rather than 14 st 7 lb.

Back when I was ill in the UK, and losing weight, the NHS were always recording my weight in Kg which surprised me a little as surely patients talk in stones and pounds (although I'd say "and a half"). I have a sense of how Kg relate to body weight because of that, but no sense at all of what Americans mean when they say somebody is 190lbs or whatever. Is that a lot? Do you really want me to divide by 14 in my head?

The imperial unit they should bring back in the UK is gallons at the petrol pump as then everybody would suddenly realise how expensive it is. We still tend to talk about miles per gallon for efficiency, but buy fuel in litres.

It´s amazing how many of these people banging on about imperial coming back and saying the Americans use it don´t realise how many differences there are between what the UK uses and what the US uses.

Yep US pints and gallons are 20% smaller than Imperial and the US ton is 240 lb lighter.

We should bring back the Great British Billion too, now that those nasty Europeans aren't forcing us to use the American one. 1,000 times better.

If you are a food manufacturer looking for increased profits (all of them) then changing back to imperial measure is a good idea, take for example a bag of sugar currently 1 kilo, repackage it for the old 2lb bag which is almost 83 grams less and sell it at the same price! Other opportunities for similar are endless and the great British public will be delighted to see brexit at work!

The US did this with coffee years ago. Used to be one pound and now it is 13 ounces. No conversion at all.

'tis what they did in the Eurozone when they switched from national currencies to the hole euro.

Yes, no figures to counter that but I do wonder how come the UK has not gone bankrupt or 5 million GBP banknotes are not being used as toilet paper, not to mention giving everyone an extra day off this month and encouraging a good old knees up. Seems to me these doomsters may not have it quite right.
