Stop the XXL Bundestag! Sign the petition

6 posts in this topic

Hi everyone,

This is a further attempt to reduce the number of German MPs. The only country in the world with more MPs than Deutschland is China, believe it or not! It looks as though there will be even more of these people living on taxpayers' money this time around. I hope there are quite a few of us who would prefer not to fund them and will sign - and encourage others to do so as well.

Here's how you get to the petition:

Petition · Schluss mit dem XXL-Bundestag! 500 Abgeordnete sind genug! · Change.org
https://www.change.org/p/deutscher-bundestag-schluss-mit-dem-xxl-bundestag-500-abgeordnete-sind-genug?source_location=topic_page

Cheers and have a relaxed weekend....

You think Germany Democracy is bad value for money? At least each German MP represents on average 114,000 of the population (same as France, bit higher than the UK). They get paid a basic salary of 120,000 Euro (plus expenses).

In Ireland, each MP represents 31,000 people (!) and they get a basic payment of 96,000 Euro.

And the expenses (including staff) are at least twice as much as that. The danger is that the current headcount of 709 could easily exceed 1000 after the election next weekend - that would be more than a 40% increase in costs (and that's not even including building/leasing the Berlin office space that those new 300 members and their staffs would require) without contributing any additional net value to democracy.

I heard the CSU is the cause of this as they win so many "Direkt Mandate". This means that other parties are given "Ausgleichsmandate" to stop the CSU being overproportionally represented.

This is the same stupid discussion on every country.

Reducing MP numbers reduces local representativeness. It also means in some countries some parties can't get a single one elected.

Want to cut costs? Then each party over 1% gets ONE MP, with voting power equivalent to the vote %.

Sounds stupid? That's stupid, but better representation than brute force MP reduction.

Not only does Germany have a very big central parliament, it has sixteen state legislatures, each town or county has a parliament too, more than enough democracy perhaps.

I am looking forward to 9.27, when the pictures* of the candidates are removed and they go back to Berlin and forget about us until the next election campaign.

* what are the many thousands of pictures made of? Is it recyclable? Could some of the pictures be kept to be used again in 2025?
