Posted 9 Sep 2021 My mother-in-law is coming to Germany to visit and stay with us for a short period. She travels from a high-risk area. So, even though she has a negative test result, she has to home quarantine herself for 10 days. Fortunately, we have an extra room in the apartment that she can use for that purpose. However, someone told me the recent regulation says that the apartment needs to have two isolated bathrooms in such a case. Otherwise, it'll be considered as breaking the rules, and things might become complicated for her and us legally! I wondered if anyone knows any official source of German regulations about self-isolation with family? Thanks!

Posted 9 Sep 2021 I sympathize with your situation, but it all depends on how seriously you want to take the quarantine requirement. It has been proven that covid can be spread through fecal matter, among other routes, and the New City Department of Health somewhat humorously issued a guideline based on this fact To be perfectly safe, you should rent a hotel room for mom-in-law for at least the first five days, until she passes another negative test, They'll probably be happy to have the business. Or have her disinfect the toilet every time she uses it. Whether you're blood family or not, you don't belong to the same household, so the usual restrictions should apply - including any prescribed quarantine, especially if she's arriving from a high-risk area, as you said. It's more or less up to you whether you choose to comply with this, because nobody's going to knock on your door and demand proof that the person who is quarantining at your premises also has their own private shitter. But think of the potential effects on you, your family, and your acquaintances if something did manage to enter your bubble because you figured it would do no harm to make an exception. Sorry to be harsh, but that's where we are right now at this stage in the pandemic. Personal decisions can have far-reaching consequences.

OP, the chances are probably higher that you and other family members will bring the virus home to her. if you're that worried, tell your mil to stay home until the virus is completely eliminated from the planet. only then will you be statistically 100% safe...maybe.

If she is from high risk area and has a vaccine certificate , i don't think it's mandatory to do quarentine. But it's always a nice idea to self isolate for 5 days and then do a pcr test to be sure.

OP if she puts the lid down BEFORE she flushes, opens the window, and no-one goes in for 10 minutes, you will have reduced that risk substantially as well. Unless you do have two loos, and you do mean 'bathroom' in which case, who cares, as catjones says, the risk is tiny.
