Hotel near HBF Munich - safe area?

I will be visiting Munich at the end of this month and have booked a hotel near the Hauptbahnhof Munich. Is this a safe area? Is it ok to walk here from the city centre late in the evening? (I am a 40 year old male)

The safe area in Munich, is known as Munich city limits 

 

ie its all generally safe. very low crime rate, especially for Men, maybe women should avoid the trees in the English garden, but that's about it.

 

But in any case, Munich is generally considered very safe, in fact that's the reason why Toytown is called Toytown is because the guys who set it up, lived in Munich and could not believe that a city the size of Munich is so safe in general

It’s not a nice area with many betting shops, casinos and table dance bars which always attracts a certain group of people. People drinking alcohol in public.

Don't listen to them, Munich centre is like a mix of Chicago Southside, Sao Paulo, five points ca. 1860 and the nasty parts of the Andaman islands.

Get some chain mail and don't look the natives in the eye and remember that they still eat their dead in Munich.

I've stayed in hotels near hbf and although some drunk people were spilling out of bars (between the 1st and 2nd corona waves) and homeless people hanging around / begging on the street, I never felt the least bit unsafe.

Back in the mid-1980s when I was part of a project team installing new computers & software in the Munich Polizeipräsidium the then chief of the Einsatzzentrale had told our project team leaders that "Munich was safe (even the main railway station)  & that his officers were everywhere".  I enjoyed my working visits there (in contrast to similar installations in other cities) as the "customer" was very positive & wanted the project to be a success. 

 

The then chief of the Einsatzzentrale is - like me - retired & we stilll  exchange Christmas greetings which is a nice personal touch.

Well the Train station certainly  looks a lot better than the bad old days, there are more betting shops, casinos - because the law preventing them was removed.

 

There seem to be less table dance bars in the city center.

 

Its always been aloud, to drink alcohol in public, many people still have a weg bier ( way beer ) on their way to a party, 

 

A while banned to drink/smoke in train station and on public transport, which I normally ignore and drink a beer on the way back from the Airport !!, dont tell anybody, please

I don´t mind people drinking or gambing as long as they don´t harass or try to mug me. I will be in Munich for 4 days only and just want to stay safe in the area around HBF when walking back to my hotel in the evening. I had previously stayed in a hotel in this area about 15 years ago but have heard some reports that the area has become less safe since those days.

This is the place you want to be if you can still get in. No hesitation in recommending it. Jump on a tram from HBF so you don't have to walk.

I have lived in Munich for over 30 years and sometimes walked near the HBF late at night on my way to various places and never had any problems. Never really heard of any incidence, except for the odd one or 2.

 

I generally consider it very safe, even for women, but obviously cannot rule out the odd  incident.  

 

Just use normal safety measures, for any new city you visit, like not walking down any very dark narrow streets etc ( of which there are not many ), and you should be fine

It's freaking München, not Tijuana or Caracas

I lived near Hbf from 2009-12, no problems, there are better hotels, bars and restaurants elsewhere. but no problems at all

well I just got back from my long weekend in Munich. I survived staying in a hotel near the HBF ( Paul-Heyse-Straße ). That street itself is quite but the neighbourhood in general is a dump, especially Goethe Str. which is full of beggars. Next time I will try Schwabing.

Last time I was there, I stayed at Hotel Leonardo and I saw a beggar or two on my way there but the Hotel was quite nice.

Not quite sure why anyone would choose to book a hotel room near a central train station area unless they can't understand a transport map!

 

Anywhere in the world, it will not be a true reflection of the city staying in the central train station area but Munich is perfectly safe for normal non dickhead people.

Oh - the maps are really nice as is the online information.

But they are dead wrong at the moment; the information at Munich Central Station is a mess (to put it nicely).

Well if you arrive by train it is very convenient. Actually there are quite a few hotels in that area.

Precisely!

The station is a real mess at the moment with all the rebuilding but the area is safe. I was involved in a passenger survey on the trams at the Hbf. overnight through to about 6 a.m. in the morning. At around 4 a.m. there were a surprising number of attractive young ladies underway, we figured out it was when the table dance bars closed.
