Posted 29 Jul 2021 Hi there, If this has been answered before please let me know as I had a search and couldn't find what I was looking for. I am looking to move to Germany from the UK (Scotland) within the next year. I will be applying for Irish citizenship to get an EU passport, which could take up to a year and I am wondering if anyone moving from the UK has managed to get a work visa at all or how it works now that we are out of the EU? If companies need to sponsor your visa etc... Any information from previous experiences of moving recently would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chris.
Posted 30 Jul 2021 Hi Chris, I've heard anecdotally that companies are generally a bit shy of hiring UK citizens without a resident's permit because it means they have to get into the visa sponsorship thing. An acquaintance was due to start a job last year but the whole project was put on pause because of the pandemic and by the time they started up again, the brexit window had closed and the company readvertised her position asking for an 'English speaking engineer with an EU passport,' which was heartbreaking for her. I'm sure plenty of companies would be willing to do a visa for an employee they really, really wanted but you'd have to have to be in that position first. The Irish passport route really seems the simplest way to do it. Good luck.

As long as she has a recognised degree and a proper salary, your acquaintance could easily get a Blue Card. Tell her to have her qualifications officially evaluated by the ZAB (https://www.kmk.org/zab/zentralstelle-fuer-auslaendisches-bildungswesen/zeugnisbewertung.html) and then contact her prospective employer with the offical info to see if they'll give her a chance. 11 hours ago, Chrismtb said: how it works now that we are out of the EU? If companies need to sponsor your visa etc Newly arriving British citizens are now like other third country nationals from priviledges countries such as Canadians (see the wiki for more info). Do you have any formal qualifications that are needed in Germany? Furthermore, you should keep in mind that as a thrid country national who doesn't already hold a residence permit for Germany you'll need to meet very specific requirements in order to be able to travel to Germany due to the current Corona restrictions.

Posted 30 Jul 2021 Just now, Chrismtb said: i have a Bachelors degree in Computer Science, specialising in Frontend Web Development I would recommend that you have your degree officially evaluated (see the link in my previous post). It is not strictly necessary, however, I think the expense is worth it. Use the search function, there are many threads with tips on how to write applications for German employers. If you have a job offer (for a skilled position in your field with adequate compensation) and your employer writes you a letter confirming that you are needed onsite in Germany, you'd be able to travel to Germany despite the Corona restrictions.
Posted 30 Jul 2021 You could spend the time until getting an Irish passport learning/improving your German. Obviously worthwhile even if you might be working in English only.

It is much more difficult and only possible under certain circumstances. Generally, it is much easier to hire a foreigner with a degree (or qualified apprenticeship) than without one. As was posted earlier by someone else, many employers don't want the hassle of hiring a third country national who needs a work permit and must go through the Vorrangprüfung.
