Posted 29 Jul 2021 Hi there, If this has been answered before please let me know as I had a search and couldn't find what I was looking for. I am looking to move to Germany from the UK (Scotland) within the next year. I will be applying for Irish citizenship to get an EU passport, which could take up to a year and I am wondering if anyone moving from the UK has managed to get a work visa at all or how it works now that we are out of the EU? If companies need to sponsor your visa etc... Any information from previous experiences of moving recently would be greatly appreciated. Posted 30 Jul 2021 Hi Chris, I've heard anecdotally that companies are generally a bit shy of hiring UK citizens without a resident's permit because it means they have to get into the visa sponsorship thing. An acquaintance was due to start a job last year but the whole project was put on pause because of the pandemic and by the time they started up again, the brexit window had closed and the company readvertised her position asking for an 'English speaking engineer with an EU passport,' which was heartbreaking for her. I'm sure plenty of companies would be willing to do a visa for an employee they really, really wanted but you'd have to have to be in that position first. As long as she has a recognised degree and a proper salary, your acquaintance could easily get a Blue Card. Do you have any formal qualifications that are needed in Germany? It is not strictly necessary, however, I think the expense is worth it. Use the search function, there are many threads with tips on how to write applications for German employers. If you have a job offer (for a skilled position in your field with adequate compensation) and your employer writes you a letter confirming that you are needed onsite in Germany, you'd be able to travel to Germany despite the Corona restrictions. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

It is much more difficult and only possible under certain circumstances. Generally, it is much easier to hire a foreigner with a degree (or qualified apprenticeship) than without one. As was posted earlier by someone else, many employers don't want the hassle of hiring a third country national who needs a work permit and must go through the Vorrangprüfung.
