Does having gaps in residence period impact naturalization?

3 posts in this topic

For example, let's say I have already been in Germany for 1 year, then I go to another EU country for ERASMUS program for 1 semester (6 months). Does it mean the years of residence required for naturalization will be reset because I left Germany for 6 months?

In other words, does the 8 year residence requirement have to be 'continuous' or can I have gaps in my stay in Germany?

In the requirements the word dauerhaft, ie. permanently is used, so this means no gaps allowed. For Erasmus students, however, this requirement could be interpreted a bit differently since for the 6-month exchange program you keep the Anmeldung and German health insurance as a foreign student. Ask your local Ausländeramt for confirmation. The student office of your uni might also be able to give some useful info here.
